Katori Shintō-ryū Philippines Sugawara Sogo Budo Yushinkan Dojo is the official Philippines branch of Sugawara Sogo Budo Institute in Japan, and has been teaching Katori Shintō-ryū since 1998 in Manila. Students of Katori Shintō-ryū study a comprehensive system of martial arts that includes:

• Kenjutsu (Japanese swordsmanship)
• Iaijutsu, Tachiai Battojutsu (Japanese sword drawing techniques)
• R

yotojutsu (two swords)
• Kodachi (short sword)
• Bojutsu (long staff technique)
• Naginatajutsu (glaive art)
• Sojutsu (art of the spear)

Students learn the principles and techniques of Katori Shintō-ryū through hours of kata training and suburi (drills) with the teacher and other students. We accept everyone from aged 12-65 years old, with or without martial arts experience.

Experience Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū in Iloilo City! ⚔

Curious about classical Japanese swordsmanship? Join us for our Open House Session and discover one of Japan’s oldest surviving martial traditions.

Whether you are completely new to martial arts, interested in Japanese history and culture, or already practicing Kendo or another martial art, you are welcome to take part. No previous experience is required.

During the session, you will experience a guided, hands-on introduction to basic movements and bokken handling. You'll also be able to observe live demonstrations of classical kata.

📍 Location: 3rd Floor, PESCAR Gymnasium, West Visayas State University, Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City
📅 Date: August 8, 2026
⏰ Time: 1:00 PM–4:00 PM
🥋 Attire: Comfortable workout clothes, or keikogi and hakama for practitioners

We're happy to announce that our second Open House will be held on July 25, 2026, and registration is now open. If you’ve been curious about Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū, this is a great chance to experience it firsthand.

• Observe a regular keiko (practice)
• Learn basic dojo etiquette
• Try fundamental bokken handling
