When long travel suspension was being developed for moto-x bikes, many unusual designs were developed for different reasons. Getting longer travel was easy, so much of the research went into getting better travel. Cantilever systems like this were developed to provide a progressive rate of suspension that got progressively stiffer along the travel. Soft for the first few inches to keep the tire on the ground, and then more and more stiff to prevent bottoming out on the biggest jolts.
