People love saying, “Don’t judge someone over politics.”

But politics isn’t just about elections, parties, or who wins a debate. At its core, politics is about people. It’s about whose rights you believe deserve protection, whose struggles you choose to acknowledge, and what kind of society you want to help build.

Your political views may not tell me your favorite music, your hobbies, or what you order at a restaurant. But they can tell me how you think about fairness, equality, freedom, compassion, accountability, and responsibility. They reveal what issues make you speak up—and what issues you’re comfortable staying silent about.

That doesn’t mean everyone who disagrees is automatically a bad person. People arrive at their beliefs through different experiences, cultures, families, and environments. Healthy disagreement is part of any democracy.

But there are moments when politics stops being an abstract discussion and becomes deeply personal. When policies affect someone's safety, healthcare, education, identity, or basic human rights, those political opinions aren't just "different perspectives" anymore—they have real consequences for real people.

Character isn't only measured by how kind you are to the people you know. It's also reflected in the values you support when those values affect people you'll never meet.

So yes, your political views don't define every part of who you are. But they absolutely reveal an important part of your moral compass. They show what you prioritize, what you tolerate, and what kind of future you're willing to stand behind.

In the end, people remember more than your words. They remember the values you defended when it mattered most.

Do you think political beliefs are just opinions, or do they reflect a person's character?

Calling All Fellow Mountaineers

Our beloved Sibuyan Island, home to the majestic Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park, is facing one of the greatest threats in its history.

Recently, six members of the Sangguniang Bayan of San Fernando voted to endorse the mining operations of Altai Philippines.

For us mountaineers, this is more than a political issue—it is about protecting a mountain, a forest, and an ecosystem that we have come to love and respect.

The proposed mining activities threaten the Olango Trail, including Camp 1 and the Olango River. The Olango River, our last reliable water source before the ascend and several nearby rivers are feared to be affected by mining operations and waste drainage if the project proceeds. Beyond mountaineering, these rivers are vital to the communities and biodiversity of Sibuyan Island.

Today, the future of Sibuyan Island—and especially Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park—stands at a critical crossroads.

We are humbly calling on our fellow mountaineers, mountaineering organizations, environmental groups, and nature advocates to stand with us, the people of Sibuyan.

We respectfully request mountaineering clubs and organizations to issue statements against mining activities that may threaten Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park and its surrounding watersheds. These will be consolidated and submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Bayay Sibuyanon, a non-government organization committed to protecting Sibuyan Island and its natural heritage.

Your voice matters. Your support matters.

Please keep Sibuyan Island in your prayers and help us amplify this call. Together, let us defend one of the Philippines’ greatest natural treasures—not only for today’s climbers, but for future generations who deserve to experience the same pristine forests, crystal-clear rivers, and breathtaking mountains that have inspired us all.

No to destructive mining. Yes to protecting Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park and Sibuyan Island.

Thank you very much.

I-WITNESS OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON “IBINASURANG PARAISO” DOCUMENTARY

On July 11, 2026, I-Witness aired “Ibinasurang Paraiso”, a documentary by Kara David that presented the environmental and human impact of the open dumpsite in Sitio Tibag, Barangay Naugsol, Subic, Zambales, particularly on the Aeta community living in the area.

These findings are not based solely on residents' accounts. They are corroborated by official government documents and are consistent with the DENR's own findings and regulatory actions.

The environmental impact of a dumpsite cannot be assessed solely by the presence or absence of nearby houses or by whether it emits a foul odor. The long-term effects of improper waste disposal on the environment, forests and ecosystems must at all times be considered.
