Senator Imee Marcos Questions ICC-Linked Arrest Attempt Inside Senate Premises
MANILA, Philippines — Senator Imee Marcos expressed concern and strong commentary regarding the reported situation involving Senator Ronald dela Rosa inside the Senate premises after former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, accompanied by alleged members of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), reportedly attempted to serve a warrant connected to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to Senator Marcos, the incident raised serious questions regarding protocol, jurisdiction, and respect for the independence of the Philippine Senate as an institution. She emphasized that any enforcement action conducted within Senate grounds must strictly follow constitutional procedures and proper coordination with Senate authorities.
Senator Marcos reportedly described the development as “deeply alarming,” noting that actions perceived as politically motivated could further intensify tensions within the political landscape.
The issue stemmed from ongoing controversies surrounding the ICC investigation related to the Duterte administration’s anti-illegal drug campaign, where Senator dela Rosa previously served as chief implementer during his tenure as Philippine National Police chief.
As of this writing, there has been no official confirmation from the NBI regarding the alleged warrant service attempt, while several lawmakers and political observers continue to debate the legality and implications of any ICC-related action within Philippine jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, supporters of Senator dela Rosa criticized the reported incident, calling it an attempt to humiliate and pressure a sitting senator inside a constitutionally protected institution.
The Senate leadership has yet to release a formal statement regarding the matter.
