Manta stacking in the blue.

This is one of those things you don’t really understand until you see it yourself, mantas literally lining up one on top of another while feeding.
It almost looks like they’re giving each other a piggyback ride. πŸ˜‚

We were outside Hanifaru Bay, in the open blue, where we had been spending the last few days with the manta aggregation.
When plankton is concentrated, mantas can form these vertical feeding formations, following the same rich patch of food through the water.

Sometimes you’ll see two or three stacked together, and sometimes even more, creating this incredible living column of mantas.

The ocean really does have the coolest things happening when you’re willing to slow down and look. πŸ–€

What if your next dance partner had wings? πŸ–€πŸŒŠ

One of our favorite moments in the water, doing a backflip beside a manta and simply moving with her.

Mantas are incredible movers.
During feeding, you’ll often see them doing backflips, barrel rolls and tight turns, especially when plankton is concentrated. These movements help them reposition themselves and stay in the best position to filter-feed.

For us, it looks like a dance.
For the manta, it’s breakfast time. πŸ˜‚

But this is one of the things we love about freediving: learning to move comfortably underwater gives you the freedom to slow down, observe, and experience marine life in a completely different way.

Manta tornado. πŸŒͺοΈπŸ–€

Still trying to process what we witnessed in Hanifaru Bay.

When the conditions are right, hundreds of reef mantas gather to feed on plankton, creating one of the most incredible underwater spectacles, the famous manta tornado.

They swim in tight circles, following the plankton-rich water as it moves through the bay.
The more mantas gather, the more mesmerizing the formation becomes.

And being in the middle of it… manta after manta gliding past, above, below and around us.. so unreal!

Surprisingly, even with the water absolutely packed with plankton, it wasn’t nearly as itchy as the plankton-rich water we’re used to in the Philippines.

πŸ˜‚ Maybe the mantas were enjoying the feast, while our skin got a free pass!

We’ve seen mantas many times, but being surrounded by so many at once is a completely different experience.

WHALE SHARK DAY πŸ¦ˆπŸ’™

What a wild experience, Evan Noel Ramirez swimming with a whale shark among the manta aggregation, just outside Hanifaru Bay.

Around the world, whale sharks are protected through fishing restrictions, marine protected areas, research, and responsible tourism.
In the Philippines, whale shark tourism helped create an alternative to hunting by giving local communities a reason to protect them alive.

But it also makes me wonder: is wildlife tourism truly ethical in its current form? Can we do better?

Maybe protecting them means more than simply making them worth seeing.
Maybe it means keeping them wild. 🌊

Inside Hanifaru Bay, gliding with mantas at their cleaning station.

For the past couple of days, we’ve been lucky enough to dive with the incredible manta aggregation outside the bay, over 30 to 100+ of mantas moving through the water together. But finding them inside Hanifaru Bay, quietly circling their cleaning station, was a completely different kind of experience.

Hanifaru Bay is relatively shallow, which makes encounters like this so special.
Instead of watching the mantas from deeper water, we could simply glide alongside them as they moved effortlessly through the cleaning station, coming back again and again to be cleaned.
Maybe there were fewer mantas inside the bay that day, but the intimacy of the encounter made it just as unforgettable.

And having Sir B**g Salazar share this special moment with us made this dive even more meaningful.

He has been one of our seasonal students for almost 5 years, joining us on our Batangas and Coron retreats, and he continues to choose adventure, challenge himself and explore the ocean with us.

There’s something incredibly inspiring about meeting people who never stop being curious.
People who keep learning, keep moving, and keep saying yes to new experiences.

The ocean has a beautiful way of reminding us that adventure doesn’t have an expiration date.

Our team was the first to find this beautiful leopard shark, and for a moment, everything just slowed down.

They’re a rare sight in the Maldives, which made this encounter even more meaningful.

Still can’t get over how beautiful this leopard shark is. 🦈🀎

Those spots, the shape, the way it moves so calmly… honestly, such a stunning shark to see underwater.

Leopard sharks are bottom-dwellers and spend a lot of their time cruising along sandy or rocky areas looking for food like crabs, fish and other small creatures.

Definitely one of those encounters you don’t forget.
