General information
Cabilao is located in the heart of the Philippines, right in the middle of the Visayas, about 1 km off Bohol's west coast and 12 km east of Cebu. It's a small heart-shaped Island with only 21 km2 in size. The climate is very pleasant due to the protected location in the middle of the Visayas. The island is probably of volcanic origin and very native. Fishing and farming is the livelihood for the approx. 3500 citizens. Fortunately Cabilao has been spared of mass tourism. There are only a few resorts for the tourists. Life is very native. Electrical power for the citizens is available only for some hours in the evening, that's why most resorts have their own power supply with backup generators. But Cable installation will start soon so that Cabilao will be connected to the public power supply in near future. However, there is no groundwater on the island, so rainwater is caught in cisterns. Drinking water has to be bought on the neighboring islands Bohol and Cebu. The development of the Infrastructure is currently in progress and streets are build. Motorized vehicles on Cabilao are motorbikes and quads. Bevölkerung There are five villages on Cabilao Island, where the major part of the population lives: Looc, Pantudlan, Cabacongan, Talisay und Cambaquiz. Most citizens are Catholics, as so often in the Philippines. The fact, that there are several chapels and churches on the island, underlines the importance of christian faith for the citizens. In the center of the island is a school and an internet cafe can also be found here. Shopping malls and gourmet restaurants don't exist. For small shopping there are some Sari-Sari Stores. Some resorts have also souvenir shops included. Bevölkerung Exploring the island is definitely worth a shot, on foot or by motorbike. The typical tropical flora and the enormous diversity of species will guarantee an unforgettable experience. Palm trees, banana and mango trees grow in a large number. Near the beach mangroves can be found. Characteristic are the many different and rare orchids. In the center of the island is a lake, where many rare birds, bats and lizards are native. Cabilaos greatest enrichment is without doubt the coral reef that surrounds nearly the entire island. The underwater slopes and walls covered in coral growth, warm watertemperature, good underwater visibility and the fullness of life beyond all imagination makes Cabilao a paradise for adventure divers. Because Cabilaos reefs are declared a protected Marine Park reefs are in best condition until now.
