Let's say the quiet part loud: finishing a race doesn't make you a coach.

A Hyrox finish. A marathon medal. An Ironman finisher shirt. These are massive, hard-earned accomplishments genuinely incredible. But they measure what YOU did with YOUR body. They say nothing about whether you can safely, effectively guide someone else's.

Being the athlete and being the coach are not the same job. A real coach the kind who's actually certified, actually licensed, actually put in the years has studied anatomy and biomechanics. They know how to build a progression, how to regress a movement for the person who needs it, how to cue so it actually lands, how to run a room instead of just occupying the front of it. That's not a personality trait. That's a body of knowledge you earn.

And here's where it gets serious: what happens when someone in that room has a bad shoulder, a herniated disc, hypermobility, autoimmune fatigue, is postpartum, is managing a heart condition, or is coming back from surgery? A real coach knows how to ask the right questions, how to modify on the spot, when to regress instead of push, and when to say, "This isn't something I should be programming for you see a specialist." Someone who's only ever coached their own body doesn't know what they don't know. And in a room full of real people with real limitations, that gap isn't small it's the difference between a workout and an injury.

And can we talk about the ones riding on borrowed credibility? Dropping the name of a legit certified coach, name-dropping a real program or cert they didn't earn, letting people assume they trained under someone or hold a credential they don't just to land clients. That's not confidence. That's not hustle. That's misrepresentation, and it's a slap in the face to every coach who actually put in the hours, the exams, and the mentorship to earn what they claim.

Think about the professions we don't question this in: nobody hands a swim coach a whistle because they once swam a fast 100 free. Nobody lets someone program strength and conditioning for a team because they personally have a big deadlift. We already know, in those worlds, that performing and teaching are different skills and that medical nuance and real credentials are part of the job, not an accessory. Group fitness shouldn't be the exception.

Somewhere along the way we started treating personal achievement and even borrowed credibility like it was a substitute for professional qualification. And that's exactly how a standard erodes: quietly, one "well, they're in great shape, they can probably teach it" at a time. Experience, education, mentorship, and understanding the human body in all its complications not just the healthy, able-bodied version of it all of that starts looking optional. It isn't.

We care about this because we've done the work, and so has every coach who's spent years in the actual profession studying movement, learning to manage a room full of different bodies, abilities, injuries, conditions, and personalities, obsessing over cueing and programming and safety because someone's health is literally in your hands. That's not a hobby you back into. It's a responsibility you train for.

Respecting this profession doesn't mean gatekeeping for the sake of it. It means being honest that the certification, the license, and the years of study exist for a reason and that reason shows up the moment a real person with a real limitation walks into your class. Being a great athlete is one kind of achievement. Being trusted to coach someone else's body every body, not just the easy ones is a completely different one. Let's stop confusing them.

Many will raise eyebrows now. Sorry, not sorry. OUR PROFESSION NEEDS TO BE RESPECTED. A lower bar was never going to raise this industry up it just chips away at everything the ones who actually mastered this craft gave their careers to build. What we create in that room the safety, the inclusion, the trust none of it happens by accident. It's built, class by class, year by year. It's earned.
