How many times have you heard this line thrown around in executive huddles or leadership syncs?

"Gen Z is just so hard to manage."

Look, let’s be fair. Sometimes there is a real performance gap. Sometimes it really is an entitlement issue. Every single generation has folks who need a reality check and some heavy coaching.

But you know what I see way more often?

Smart, capable young people who slowly go silent. Not because they don't care, but because nobody ever taught them what ownership actually looks like in practice.

We give them tasks—and zero context.
We hit them with corrections—and zero coaching.
We yell for "initiative!"—without ever defining where their authority actually starts and stops.

And then we act surprised when they freeze up and wait for permission.

It’s a self-inflicted trap.

Maybe the question isn't "Why are they so hard to manage?"

Maybe the uncomfortable reality is "Are our management habits actively teaching them to be passive?"

Nobody is asking to lower the bar. High standards aren't negotiable—not in this market. But high expectations without clear boundaries, useful feedback, and a real path to grow? That isn't high-performance culture. That’s just setting people up to fail.

When you look at your own managers today—what’s the one thing younger team members are actually starving for?

To the volunteer youth leader who has a calling, a day job, a family, a group chat that will not stop, and somehow… a youth gathering to make by Friday:

You are not failing because you still have not built the program.

You are carrying too much of it alone.

Encounter Kits are ready-to-run Catholic youth gathering guides built to carry the blank-page work: the program flow, facilitator guide, activities, prayer moments, small-group guide, worksheets, and run sheet.

So you can spend less time starting from zero—and more time praying, welcoming, listening, and actually being present with your young people.

Start with the kit that fits your group right now. Try it. Adapt it. Make it yours. If it helps, the complete bundle will be there when you are ready.

And on a personal note: every purchase helps me keep serving in mission while providing for my family. This is one small way we can partner—your ministry receives a tool, and my missionary life is sustained.

You can have a full team and still make people feel alone.

Not because you do not care.

But because leadership gets busy. Every message becomes a task. Every conversation has an agenda. And without meaning to, we can train people to believe that we remember them most when we need something from them.

Your most reliable volunteers are often the most at risk.

They say yes.
They fill the gaps.
They do not complain.

So nobody notices when they start carrying too much.

This is not about never asking people to serve.

It is about refusing to make service the price of belonging.

Before you send your next “Are you free?” message, try this first:

“Hey. No agenda today. I just wanted to ask: how are you, really?”

Then let their answer be the point of the conversation.

Jesus first called people to be with Him, then sent them. That order is a leadership lesson.

People are not resources for the mission.
They are part of the mission.

Who is one reliable person you can check on this week? Don’t tag them. Just message them.

Some leaders are not tired because they serve too much.

They are tired because they have forgotten how to receive.

You know how to show up.
You know how to lead the prayer.
You know how to check on everyone.
You know how to carry the room when things get heavy.

But you were never meant to give from an empty soul.

Jesus does not love you more on the weeks you are productive. He does not love you less on the weeks you are tired.

Before you give people your strength this week, receive.

Receive God’s love.
Receive someone’s care.
Receive the truth that you do not have to earn your place in the mission.

What is one way you can receive before you give this week?
