A large-scale study published in the European Heart Journal has found that sudden cardiac death accounts for a disproportionately high number of fatalities among male bodybuilders, with professional athletes facing a risk more than five times higher than amateurs; the average age at death was 45.

Researchers examined over 20,000 competitive male bodybuilders and identified 121 verified deaths, 38% of which were due to sudden cardiac events; contributing factors included heart enlargement, coronary artery disease, and the abuse of anabolic substances.

The findings highlight an urgent need for greater awareness, medical oversight, and policy reform in competitive bodybuilding, with researchers warning that extreme training, drug use, and psychological stress can carry serious cardiovascular and mental health risks.
