Not many people know this but before the 50s, Thailand actually didn’t have any sport called Muay Thai.

Instead, they just had Muay, which was a term used for the traditional fighting practices across Thailand.

Each region had its own style of Muay and these styles would later all come under the name Muay Boran.

Fights were organised locally, at temple fairs, festivals but there was no national rules, no main authority so the rules of each fight were different.

It wasn’t until around the 50s that Muay was organised into a regulated sport with rounds, gloves, judges, and permanent stadiums (Rajadamnern and Lumpinee) and started to be called Muay Thai

These photos are of Rajadamnern Stadium, which opened in 1945 and played a main role in standarising the sport and shaping what we now know as Muay Thai

Pretty cool stuff !
