The struggle for labor rights is one that has endured for years, repeatedly exposing the disparity in the lives of the people that make the Philippines. Last March-April of this year, around 80,000 jeepney drivers nationwide went on strikes protesting the rise of fuel prices, demanding the suspension of excise and value-added taxes (VAT) on fuel products and a rollback in oil prices. Quite recently, workersโ groups and trade unions filed a petition seeking a โฑ250 increase in the daily minimum wage across Western Visayas, seeking to cope with rising prices. But the calls do not end here.
To commemorate Mayo Uno is to remember that a nation cannot prosper when its people are being exploited. The Philippines remains at a dead end for every day that passes in which teachers hold two jobs just to make ends meet, BPO workers grapple with the uncertainty of contractualization, and local talent go abroad for the opportunities they cannot get here.
Workers do not abandon their livelihoods for a day and go to the streets for their perseverance to be undermined as rebellion. They do so because, in a system that often ignores, their collective voice is the only currency they have left. They fight for their rights, as it serves as the thin line that separates their dignified labor from that of machines. Hence, the strikes that some reduce as an inconvenience are a reminder to the public, and especially those in power that their hard work is worth more than minimum compensation and empty, temporary solutions.
The essence of Mayo Uno is to celebrate the invaluable contributions workers bring to uplift the Philippines. From the farmers and drivers who endure extreme heat daily, to the teachers and healthcare workers who settle for underfunded systems, our nation moves because they move.
As of November 2025, the minimum wage for workers in Western Visayas ranges from โฑ520-โฑ550. But according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), inflation may settle between 5.6% to 6.4% this April 2026 due to intensified inflation risks from higher fuel prices and the rising costs of key commodities such as rice, fish, meat, and electricity. Can minimum wage earners afford to put food on the table, and sustain their families on a meager budget? Here is the truth some struggle to comprehend: to be a minimum wage worker should never have to mean rationing food, sacrificing basic needs, and racking up debt just to survive.
Drivers have lost their lives waiting in the heat to get their promised โฑ5000 fuel subsidies. Several of these drivers wait for so long just to emerge empty handed due to discrepancies in their data. To demand help from the government should never involve having to sacrifice their dignity or losing their lives. Worse, despite the temporary suspension of taxes on fuel products like LPG and kerosene, the problem persists: diesel fuel prices remain too high for drivers to continue being on the road. Some of them barely even make a profit. Others have no choice but to turn to other jobs if it means earning for their families.
The often romanticized โFilipino resilienceโ merely applauds workers, yet does not add a single centavo to their pay; it is a term born out of survival and a lack of choice, rather than true empowerment. True celebration requires a shift from appreciation to actual, tangible reform. Together, we must amplify the demands of labor unions and advocate to change the policies that exploit and alienate workers from their labor.
