Lee Priest recently shared a blunt take on how modern gyms have changed—and not necessarily for the better. Known for his old-school mentality and brutally honest opinions, Priest said today’s gyms have become “too comfortable,” with bright aesthetic lighting, air conditioning, music, and soft, user-friendly machines that make the environment look more like a lounge than a hardcore training ground. According to him, when a place looks that clean and polished, it almost discourages real intensity. You start worrying about sweating on the floor instead of pushing to failure.

Priest contrasted this with the gritty training culture he came from, where chalk dust, noise, and sweat were normal parts of the process. For him, bodybuilding was never about comfort—it was about effort, consistency, and mindset. He believes the modern fitness industry has shifted toward aesthetics and convenience, which can sometimes dilute the raw work ethic that built the physiques of the 80s and 90s.

To prove his point, Priest pointed to his own early success. He revealed that when he won his first show, he trained entirely at home for six months using old Powertec equipment. He didn’t rely on a commercial gym, fancy machines, or a perfect atmosphere. The only reason he occasionally stepped into a gym was for cardio—and even then, it was more to watch people and avoid boredom than because he needed the facility.

His message is clear: while gyms can be useful, they aren’t essential for building a winning physique. What matters most is consistency, intensity, and making the most of whatever equipment you have. In true old-school fashion, Priest emphasized that results come from hard work, not from how comfortable or aesthetically pleasing the training environment is.
