Our very own Engr. Alexis Belonio. 🥰

When we talk about true Filipino ingenuity, one name deserves to be at the top of the list: Engr. Alexis Belonio.

In 2003, while others saw nothing but waste, this agricultural engineer from Iloilo saw opportunity. Disturbed by rice mills dumping husks into rivers, he asked a simple yet powerful question—what if this "trash" could be turned into treasure?

What happened next was nothing short of remarkable.

Against all odds, Belonio invented a low-cost cooking stove that runs entirely on rice husks—a clean-burning, gasifier stove that produces a powerful blue flame. A feat that experts had previously dismissed as impossible.

But here's what makes his story truly inspiring. Instead of patenting his invention and chasing profit, Belonio did something extraordinary: he shared everything.

The rice husk stove technology was made completely open-source. Free. Available to anyone who needed it. Distributed freely across the Philippines, Indonesia, and East Timor.

Why?

"Because it is a God-given technology that needs to be shared, especially with the less privileged," he humbly said.

His work earned him the prestigious Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2008—the first Filipino to ever receive that honor. But for Belonio, the real reward has always been seeing his invention ease the burden of poor families, turning what was once waste into a lifeline.

Today, let's remember that true greatness isn't measured by what we keep, but by what we give away.
