Dahil dito, muling lumilitaw ang isang mahalagang tanong: Bilang isang public figure, saan nagtatapos ang personal na kalayaan sa pagpapahayag at saan nagsisimula ang responsibilidad?

Bakit nangyari ito? And why does it feel like until now, there is still no full accountability for the decisions and actions that led to what happened to him? 💔

This is not about putting down a school or erasing its history. Far from it. We will never forget what athletes like Alyssa Valdez have done to inspire us. But this is a reminder that behind every jersey, every win, and every name on the lineup — there is a human being. There is a young person with dreams, with a family waiting for them, and a right to be protected and treated properly.

Sports should always be a safe space for growth, not a place where dreams turn into pain. This story makes us ask: Are we prioritizing the athlete’s well-being, or are we just focused on the glory and the results?

Rene’s story serves as a heavy lesson. We celebrate the stars, but we must also make sure that every athlete — no matter their status — is valued, cared for, and given justice when things go wrong.

Alyssa Valdez, former and current face of the national team, addresses the issues and conversations surrounding the sport. She acknowledges the valid concerns from all sides, but stresses: “What the sport needs is not more division, but leadership in all its forms. Leadership that listens. Leadership that puts the welfare of athletes first.”

Beyond the call for change, she sends hope to every athlete: “Padayon tayo — huwag mapagod, matakot, o sumuko sa pangarap na magrepresenta ng bansa.”
