Adolescent stage is a very critical and challenging developmental phase. When kids are young (i.e. toddler, grade school), this is the right time to set rules and limits (what they are allowed to do and not do, because it impacts on their safety, health and well-being). Ideally when they become teenagers, they have already internalized and imbibed these limits and values. If we set limits only at their teenage years, it becomes very difficult because usually teenagers do not like to be told off. They tend to be defensive and resistant. So we need to communicate with them briefly but with candor and respect.

Prolonged and excessive use of the internet can alter our brain and may make kids and adults more distracted, anxious and impulsive. Could this be also impacting on our emotions so more people are depressed and suicidal these days?

Nicholas Carr is the author of The Shallows, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and The Glass Cage, among other books. Former executive editor of the Harvard Business Review , he has written for The Atlantic, the New York Times, and Wired.

The Shallows examines the effect Internet technology is having on the human mind. In the digital age, we are overwhelmed with stimuli. Our computers, phones and digital tools allow us constant access to seemingly infinite information and give us a sense of connectivity. But there are dangers!

In my psychotherapy practice, I have observed how early childhood trauma (emotional, physical, sexual abuse and even emotional neglect) has impacted the mental health of my clients (i.e. ADHD, depression, suicidal ideation, panic/anxiety disorder). Dr. Nadine Burke Harris' research validates the correlation of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) with Physical and Mental Health. The science is clear but sometimes people (parents most especially) seem to be in denial because this problem affects most of us.

Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds acros...

A lot of teenagers and young adults who are experiencing mental problems now like depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts seem to have NOT experienced the joy of interactive and creative play, especially outdoor play. They have been used to gadgets and internet based play and their free time is spent on internet and social media. They are " digitally connected" but lacks regular " real human connection" (coz everyone is busy as well connecting digitally)? And consequently, they may feel isolated, lonely and anxious? KIds and even adults need to play and have balance in their lives. Play is therapeutic.

It is very important that kids engage in free and creative play, and especially play outdoors so they will have a normal development (intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally). Over-use of gadgets and technology devices may negatively impact their social, emotional and mental development and may result to inattentiveness, anxiety, social awkwardness, and even depression. Parents play a crucial role in ensuring their kids are able to observe reasonable limits or boundaries and ensure a balanced development.

Smartphones and tablets are causing issues for kids as young as two years old.

A lot of my own clients who are having panic attacks and depression have experienced emotional trauma in childhood.

Research has found that early trauma can lead to “limbic scarring” on the brain.

This is a very important video for everyone. Please take time to watch. Children have to play - it is developmental and empowering for them. Let's bring back the playgrounds (oh I remember the patintero, piko, tumbang preso, bahay bahayan, etc); get our kids to connect with other children in the neighborhood so they develop social skills and learn to trust themselves. This will give them a sense of control and make them feel secure. Very important not to expose them too soon, and too much to gadgets and internet. Play is healing.

Everything happens for a reason/purpose. Oftentimes while we are going through a very difficult situation, we could only feel the pain and the suffering (and this could be unbearable), and that's perfectly normal. It is good to acknowledge and accept all the emotions that we are experiencing, and even better to let it out (by crying or talking it out with a trusted person). When " the dust has settled", or after we have gone through the wave of emotions, we can begin to reflect and appreciate the " gem" ( the valuable lesson/ gain). We may come out of the painful experience stronger...wiser and kinder.
