Regarding the TIKBALANG: Some of you may remember a few years back when I made 3 webisodes on the history and evolution of some folkloric beings. One of the episodes was on the Tikbalang. A challenge in this episode was proving the image of a horse was present in the Philippines before the Spanish arrived. I got A LOT of sh*t for that. The general thinking has opened up in the last several years, but even in 2015 it wasn’t common to break the current thoughts surrounding Philippine history. Essentially, I am always trying to throw out the notion that the archipelago’s history is divided as pre-colonial and post-colonial. There is a long and beautiful history that started millenniums before.

In this episode I hypothesized that early Filipinos were exposed to the image of the horse through Chinese trade - they had also migrated from areas that had exposure to horses and the Hindu image of Hayagriva. In any case, I’m always looking for new pieces of information to move my hypothesis into the realm of theory. I found a very compelling one while making my way through some of Henry Otley Beyer’s work. A carved horse head from approximately 300CE, providing evidence that the image of the horse existed in Luzon more than 1600 years ago - 1200 years before the Spanish.

This doesn’t make my hypothesis conclusive, but it certainly helps me re-examine it and gives more confidence in presenting the ideas.

I really can’t express how much I love doing this.
