For most people, badminton is all about the players battling it out on the court. But behind every match is an umpire whose decisions help keep the game fair. One of those officials steadily making a name for himself is Coach Mon Arjay Tungao.
Only a few weeks after officiating at the Philippine Badminton Open, he has earned another significant opportunity. He is now serving as an umpire in the Philippine Junior International Series, a BWF-sanctioned tournament that features talented young athletes from different countries.
His selection is even more meaningful because he is the only representative from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) chosen to officiate in the tournament. It is a recognition of the hard work, discipline, and professionalism he has shown throughout his officiating career.
Moving from a national event to an international competition in such a short period is no small achievement. It reflects the confidence that tournament organizers have placed in his ability to handle matches with fairness, accuracy, and composure.
Although umpires often work behind the scenes, they play a vital role in every competition. Their decisions ensure that the rules are applied fairly and that every match is conducted with integrity. He is a reminder that there are many ways to make a meaningful contribution to sports beyond being an athlete.
As he continues to represent the Bangsamoro region on the international stage, he carries with him the pride of the community that has supported him from the beginning. The Dulawan Sunrise Badminton Club is proud of what he has accomplished and wishes him continued success. His achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring badminton officials and young sports enthusiasts who dream of reaching the international stage.
