Plan your dives, even on recreational or fun dives!
When everyone’s in a playful, energized mood, some divers tend to forget the technical side of freediving. I’ve seen quite a few not-so-good things happen in these sessions (and still do in some islands I visit). Feels like I’ve witnessed more injuries in fun dives than in training dives 🤷🏾♂️
Here are some practices I follow whenever I explore new sites, so sessions stays enjoyable, productive, and safe:
🪶 Know the dive site. Explore with an expetienced buddy who can navigate well. Do warm-ups and check-out dives to understand the terrain and the movements you can safely do. Familiarity builds confidence and helps you explore what sparks your curiosity. If the site is busy, find a spot and plan your dives around it.
🪶 Align with your team if you're shooting content: If you’re getting photos or videos, share your vision with your buddy and the photographer/videographer. Plan the spots and movements needed to get the shots you want. Agree on hand signals or ways to communicate underwater. If something doesn’t feel right, abort the dive and try again.
🪶 Take your time to prepare and recover. Give yourself time before and after each dive. Relaxation brings better awareness and keeps your dives intentional. Never rush your round: doing more with less effort starts with being calm.
🪶 Know your limits. Don’t push for movements your body isn’t ready for, unfamiliar depths, unpracticed techniques, missed equalization, or longer breath holds just to “nail” a shot. Recreational dives should stay safe and fun.
🪶 Respect underwater life. The creatures and corals make beautiful backdrops, but never touch them. Swim with them gently and avoid chasing or stressing any marine life.
Safe dives 🙌🏾
