CEBU CITY, Philippines | The Visayas Grid will be placed under Red Alert from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. today, September 4, 2026, as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) warned of tight power supply across the region.
Based on NGCP's 8:00 a.m. update, the Visayas Grid has an available capacity of 2,233 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,504 MW.
Prior to the Red Alert period, the grid will be under Yellow Alert from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will return to Yellow Alert from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
NGCP identified the unavailability of the Visayas' large coal-fired power plants, TVI 1 and PEDC 3, as among the factors contributing to the alert declarations. Limited or unavailable power imports from Mindanao also contributed to the tight supply situation.
The grid operator reported that several generating units remain unavailable or are operating at reduced capacity. A total of 815.8 MW is currently unavailable to the grid due to forced outages and derated capacities.
NGCP explained that a Red Alert is declared when available power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement. Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid's contingency requirement.
With the expected tight supply, consumers are encouraged to practice energy conservation, particularly during peak demand hours, to help manage electricity consumption and support grid stability.
The public is advised to remain alert for official updates from NGCP and local distribution utilities regarding the power situation.
