To all the players who dream of playing in Manila, whether in the UAAP or NCAA:

Most of what you see on social media are the highlights the packed arenas, the recognition, the scholarships, the opportunities, and the excitement of competing at the highest level. Manila is where many athletes dream of being, and it’s easy to fall in love with that picture.

But what you don’t often see are the sacrifices that come with it.

People rarely talk about the pressure of proving yourself every single day in training. They don’t talk about being far from home when you’re sick, tired, or struggling. They don’t talk about missing family gatherings, birthdays, and important moments because you’re hundreds of kilometers away. They don’t talk about wanting to go home but being unable to because travel expenses are costly and your responsibilities to the team come first.

We spent our birthday alone in the gym, working out. No party, no family dinner, no celebration just me or, in the weights room, and the commitment to the dream I chose to pursue.

Those are the moments people don’t post on TikTok or Facebook.

Playing in Manila requires more than talent. It requires sacrifice, independence, mental toughness, and a strong heart. There will be days when nobody is there to pick you up, and you will have to find the strength within yourself to keep going.

That’s why this decision should never be rushed. Going to Manila is not just about volleyball or basketball, scholarships, or fame. It’s about being ready for a completely different lifestyle and accepting the challenges that come with it.

If you still have doubts, there is nothing wrong with being patient. Continue developing your skills, your confidence, and your character. Growth is not a race.

You will know you’re ready when the dream becomes bigger than the fear, when the sacrifices become worth it, and when you no longer have to second guess yourself.

Chasing opportunities in Manila is a privilege, but staying there and succeeding requires a strong mind, a strong heart, and the courage to embrace every challenge that comes with it.
