A Statement for National Heroes' Day
We have a peculiar way of remembering our heroes. We put their names on monuments, display their faces, and dedicate a day on the calendar to honor them. But after the ceremonies end, the same question remains: what kind of society did they fight for, and what kind of society are we passing on to the next generation?
Today, we commemorate National Heroes Day, a time where we honor the heroes who valiantly fought for our nation in times of oppression, and to the heroes of todayโas they continue to serve our communities daily in spite of systemic struggles.

Throughout history, many people stood up not because they wanted to become heroes, but because there were things they could no longer accept. Thus, in every worker fighting for a living wage, every farmer defending the land they cultivate, every student struggling for access to education, and every community resisting the seizure of their livelihood, we see the same spirit of resistance that has long been part of our peopleโs history. Their sacrifices laid the groundwork for freedom and opportunities we have today.
Yet it is difficult to speak of heroism while society continues to breed the same problems that our heroes were forced to confront. Under imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat-capitalism, wealth and power remain concentrated in the hands of a few while the majority bears the weight of crisis. As institutions continue to fail to serve them, injustice becomes normalizedโlet this day not only serve as a remembrance for our heroesโ sacrifices but a reminder to always challenge and fight oppressive systems to maintain the freedom they indomitably fought for.
Even within the university, these conditions are felt. As the student population grows, classrooms, laboratories, equipment, spaces, and funding remain insufficient for learning. Students are forced to spend their own money on research, fieldwork, and other academic requirements. Amid budget cuts and the continued commercialization of education, costs that should be shouldered by the state are increasingly passed on to students. Education is reduced to the production of โhuman capital,โ rather than upheld as a right that develops young people capable of understanding and transforming society.

We see this even in the way new technologies and development projects are discussed. In the name of โinnovationโ and โdevelopment,โ projects such as Pax Silica are being pushed forward despite their enormous demands on land, water, and energy. While public education remains underfunded and many communities continue to struggle with basic necessities, projects like these are presented as visions of the future --- for whom?
We do not oppose science and technology. What we oppose is their use divorced from the needs of the people. Science has value when it helps address the real problems of our nation. This is why remembering our heroes must not end with admiration. Remembrance is not enough if we do not examine why people were forced to sacrifice their lives to transform an unjust society. It is not enough to place their names in textbooks while teaching the young to remain silent, unquestioning, and uninvolved.
We do not want an education that teaches the youth how to adapt to a rotten system. We want an education that teaches them how to understand it, question it, and change it.
This is our stand for National, Scientific, and Mass-Oriented Education. An education rooted in the needs of the masses; one that uses science to understand the countryโs real conditions; and one that develops students who do not merely chase diplomas and jobs, but possess the capacity to serve the nation.
On National Heroes Day, we must not only ask who our heroes are but what kind of society they continue to call upon us to fight for.
Because a hero is not simply someone remembered after their life has ended. A hero is also someone who stands up while there is something worth fighting for. In every question we refuse to be afraid to ask, in every truth we refuse to be buried, and in every action we take alongside the people, that is where we truly continue the legacy of heroism.
