The tragic loss of two young student-athletes during a team activity has shaken not only the Ateneo community, but also parents, athletes, coaches, and schools across the country.

Today, our hearts are with the families who have lost their sons. No words can ease the pain of a parent who expected their child to come home and instead received unimaginable news.

But beyond mourning, we must act.

We respectfully call for a comprehensive joint investigation involving the Philippine National Police, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Commission on Higher Education, and independent experts in sports safety, risk management, and athlete welfare.

This call is not motivated by anger, speculation, or a desire to assign blame before the facts are known.

It is motivated by a simple belief:

The purpose of a joint investigation must go beyond determining what happened. It must answer the more important question:

Student-athletes place their trust in schools, coaches, and institutions. Parents do the same. That trust carries with it a responsibility to ensure that training, team-building activities, camps, and athletic programs are conducted with the highest regard for safety.

Regardless of the findings, this tragedy should become a turning point for Philippine school sports.

We urge educational institutions, athletic associations, and government agencies to work together in developing a national Student-Athlete Safety Framework that includes:

โ€ข Mandatory risk assessments for all off-campus and outdoor athletic activities.

โ€ข Certified safety officers and emergency response personnel during high-risk events.

โ€ข Swimming proficiency assessments before participation in water-based activities.

โ€ข Standardized emergency action plans for all athletic programs.

โ€ข Parent disclosure and consent requirements detailing the nature and risks of activities.

โ€ข Independent safety audits of athletic camps and training programs.

โ€ข Clear accountability structures identifying who is responsible for student welfare during activities.

โ€ข Annual safety certification requirements for coaches and athletic staff.

Athletic excellence and athlete safety are not opposing goals. The best programs in the world pursue both.

We can continue to build resilient, disciplined, and competitive athletes without exposing them to unnecessary risks.

The true measure of a successful sports program is not only the championships it wins, but also the care it shows to the young people entrusted to it.

Let this tragedy become the catalyst for meaningful reform.

Let the investigation uncover the truth, wherever it leads.

Let the lessons be learned openly and honestly.

And let us build a system where every parent can confidently send their child to practice, to camp, or to a team activity knowing that safety is not an afterthoughtโ€”it is a priority.

The lives we have lost cannot be brought back.

But we can honor their memory by ensuring that their loss leads to lasting change.

For the families.

For the athletes.

For every parent who entrusts a child to a school sports program.

And for every young athlete who deserves to come home safely.

Basketball was never meant to cost a child his life.

Not every player will become famous.
Not every player will get a scholarship or a trophy.

But every player deserves to grow up healthy.
To laugh with teammates.
To eat with family after games.
To wake up the next morning.

In this generation of pressure, highlights, rankings and grind culture, we sometimes forget what really matters.

The real goal of basketball is to build discipline, brotherhood, character, memories, and a life they can still enjoy long after the final buzzer.

Parents, coaches, and players should remember - Life matters more than stats because everyone can forget even the brightest players. Oftentimes, let's pause & watch for our kids.

At the end of the day, no trophy or any validation is worth more than a child coming home healthy, happy & alive.

TEAM REVEAL: HARDWARRIORS โ€“ 17 UNDER

Sting like a bee. Fight like a warrior.

Team HardWarriors 17U enters Season 10 with a dangerous identity โ€” built on discipline, toughness, and nonstop energy. Represented by the bee logo, this team symbolizes unity, work ethic, and relentless effort. Just like a hive, every player has a role, and together they move with purpose and precision.

They are small in nothing but name โ€” because on the court, they play with sharp focus, fast decisions, and a mentality that never stops attacking.

Every possession is a mission.
Every defender is a target.
Every game is a battle.

At the 17U level, pressure is real โ€” but so is their hunger. HardWarriors donโ€™t wait for opportunities; they create them through hustle, defense, and teamwork.

Like bees working together, they trust the system, protect each other, and strike when the moment is right.

This is not just basketball.
This is discipline in motion.
This is energy with purpose.
This is a hive ready for war. ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ
