WHEN IT’S YOUR GYMNAST… 💝
Sometimes, parents see the gymnast.
But the coach sees the journey.
Coaching gymnastics is more than teaching skills, preparing routines, or standing beside the floor during competition.
It is watching the small details that others may not notice.
It is remembering how an athlete moved yesterday, noticing what changed today, and thinking about what they need tomorrow.
It is knowing when to push, when to slow down, when to correct, when to encourage, and when to simply say, “You’re not ready yet, but we’ll get there.”
It is watching the same skill hundreds of times.
It is celebrating progress that may look small to others but means everything to the athlete.
It is correcting the same mistake again and again—with patience.
It is thinking about safety before difficulty.
It is considering readiness before opportunity.
It is balancing the needs of one gymnast while also carrying responsibility for an entire team.
And sometimes, coaching means making decisions that are not always visible or easily explained from the outside.
Because a coach doesn’t only see the few minutes of competition.
A coach sees the months and years behind those few minutes.
The preparation.
The setbacks.
The discipline.
The confidence.
The tears.
The breakthroughs.
The habits.
The potential.
And when it’s your child, it is completely natural to see everything through the eyes of a parent.
But perhaps, for a moment, it also helps to see gymnastics through the eyes of a coach.
Because coaching is not simply about making a gymnast better at gymnastics.
It is about knowing the athlete deeply enough to understand when to challenge them, when to protect them, when to believe in them, and when to wait for the right moment.
There is so much of coaching that happens quietly, behind the scenes, long before a gymnast steps onto the floor.
What you see is the performance.
What the coach carries is the process.
And that process is where so much of the real work—and so much of the love for the athlete—happens.🤸♀️✨
