I used to believe in God because I thought I had to.

It felt like another responsibility—another rule to follow, another chore to perform so I could call myself “good.”

Then I stopped.

For years, I lived as though everything depended on me. I became the god of my own life. I worked, planned, controlled, chased success, and tried to build a life strong enough that I would never need anyone to save me.

And for a while, I thought I was free.

But eventually, my soul became tired.

The things I once chased began to lose their shine. The things I thought would fulfill me no longer interested me. I wondered whether I was depressed, ungrateful, or simply broken.

Then something inside me began to awaken.

Memories from different seasons of my life started coming back—the moments I survived, the doors that closed, the people who loved me when I could not love myself, the times I was redirected without understanding why.

And suddenly, I saw a pattern I had missed for years.

God had never disappeared.

Even during the six years I called myself an atheist, He was there.

He was there when I stopped praying.

He was there when I stopped saying His name.

He was there while I was trying to control everything.

He was there in my exhaustion, my confusion, my failures, my relationship, my healing, and even in the questions I thought were pulling me away from Him.

I did not return because someone frightened me into believing.

I did not return because I suddenly had every answer.

I returned because something in me finally recognized the Presence that had been carrying me all along.

This time, faith does not feel like a chore.

It does not feel like pretending to be certain because I am afraid of what will happen if I am not.

This time, I do not need to force myself to believe.

I know.

Not because I can explain everything.

Not because my life is perfect.

Not because I never doubt or struggle.

But because when I look back at every version of myself—the believer, the atheist, the wounded one, the exhausted one, the one searching for meaning, and the one slowly coming home—I see the same truth:

I may have stopped believing in Him.

But He never stopped reaching for me.

He was there all along.

God came to rescue me.
