The sport of beach tennis holds its roots from Italy, where it was developed in the year 1970 in Lido degli Estensi (Ferrara). In early 2000, the popularity of beach tennis started spreading globally and was widely accepted in the coastal regions. In 2010, the sport received its recognition from the International Tennis Federation. The ITF manages and governs the sport on the international stage. Since 2013, regional as well as world championships has been organized by the ITF. The sport is widely played by many professional tennis players including the famous Roger Federer. In 2015, the conducted 89 official beach tennis tournaments all over the world. The same year, 28 countries participated in the World Team Championship which included Brazil, Italy, Russia, France, Japan, Latvia, Cyprus, and Mauritius. Today, it is played in more than 53 countries, including France, Poland, Austria, the UK, and Switzerland etc. with almost half a million players from around the world. Boracay Beach Tennis
Beach tennis was introduced in Boracay about 10 years ago (2012) by an Italian entrepreneur. He taught his staff how to play the game using an improvised pole that was made of bamboo and a beach tennis net. Initially, it was played at the beachfront in Station 2. It quickly gained popularity among the locals and now can be seen in all the stations of white beach including at the other side of Boracay, the Bulabog beach. Currently, Boracay has its own beach tennis club aptly named Boracay Beach Tennis Club headed by Mr. Its members are composed mainly of locals, entrepreneurs, staffs, including guests, etc. The primary goal of the group is not only to encourage a healthy lifestyle but also to promote friendship and camaraderie among its players.
