Tagbilaran City Division advances semis
in Category A Taekwondo Elementary Girls
by: Rey Marvin H. Lambus

DEFINING MOMENT. Chelsie hurled her definitive hit with cadence and prowess at Mansasa Covered Court, Tagbilaran City which eventually landed her to the semis spot.

“I focused on my goal – that highly illusive gold,” blurted out Chelsie Andrea J. Requirme, 8 year old representative of the Tagbilaran City Division in the Category A of Taekwondo Elementary Girls when asked what’s on her head while the elimination round took off on February 26, 2018 at Mansasa Covered Court, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
As a first timer, her coach, Maria Celine Ericka Grandeza, commended Chelsie for being passionate during their practices. Her training included competing in a summer tourney aside from their regular practice for almost a year. What started out as a mere little girl’s reverie to defend her family paved the way for her as far as 2018 CVIRAA Meet.
Despite the strong Taekwondo Philippine team from Cebu City whom she considered as her toughest opponent to date, her confidence and commitment to win far outweigh all her apprehensions. She successfully clinched a spot in the semis bout which games are expected to begin on February 27, 2018 at the same venue.

This time, the Gold is mine!
Carl Angel D. Hilbero

A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination, and hard work.
Engraved in every heart of an athlete is the burning desire to bring home the most coveted Gold Medal and to bring pride and honor to their division. For the 12-year old dedicated, resilient boy from Valencia, Bohol, Johnny Lewis Daleon Gayamara, it is on top of his Bucket’s List to grab a gold medal since his first CVIRAA appearance way back 2015 in Naga City. Yes! It is his third consecutive time to compete in the CVIRAA meet as a gymnast and most probably his last chance for he will be graduating this year in the elementary. All his childhood hopes and aspirations are poured for this last opportunity.
And he made it! With great jubilation and exhilaration, he triumphantly bagged the only Gold medal for the Division of Bohol in the Floor Exercise which made him qualified for the Palarong Pambansa in Vigan City this April. In the previous CVIRAA Meets, Lewis always landed in the third place until this year, he finally brought home the bacon. Indeed, good things come in threes because it is his third time and he finally won a Gold medal. Lola Julieta, his very supportive grandmother, literally jumped for joy after hearing the result. “Nahugyaw gyud mi pagkahibaw nga Gold medallist akong apo, hasta tibuok Valencia nalipay tungod kay naay madala sa Palaro nga taga amoa,” exclaimed Lola Julieta.
Apparently, it wasn’t just Lewis’ journey alone. All throughout his gymnastics endeavour was his very supportive grandparents, Lola Julieta and Lolo Zacarias Daleon, who were constantly and untiringly present in every competition, cheering loudly for their apo. Her mother, Christy Gayamara worked in Dubai and hasn’t come home for four years now but she never failed to show her unfaltering support to his eldest son. Having known the great news about his son, she even decided not to go to work. She was still in cloud nine as she watched the video clip of her son’s outstanding performance during the competition even if it’s just over the net. She was absolutely proud of his son’s achievement. It was all God’s plan all along. For the upcoming Palarong Pambansa, his mother will already witness the actual performance of his son, no longer a mere video clip, for she will come home from Dubai to witness his son’s first attendance in the national gymnastics competition.
Growing up without his father on his sight, Lewis never considered it as a gloomy, depressing scenario because he has his affectionate, tender-hearted grandparents who filled the gap his father should have done. From his birthplace, Cagayan de Oro City, they moved back to Bohol for good when he was five years old. Her mother opted to work abroad to suffice their needs with his younger sister, Jennilyn. They were left under the care of their Lolo and Lola who taught them to become upright and disciplined apos.
During his tender age, Lewis already had the potential of a gymnast. He loved tumbling, jumping, swinging, and dancing. Actually, his parents were into dancing and gymnastics before; consequently, heredity speaks. His coach, Michael Ipanag, Valencia Central Elementary School persistently encouraged and trained Lewis to harness his skills in the said sports. He started joining gymnastics competition when he was in Grade 3.
Indeed, dreams do come true when you keep on working hard for them and never give up.

Baclohan pins Montebon down via knowdown
By: Jocelyn J. Laguna

“Wala ko nagdahom nga ako ang modaug kay ang ako baya nga kontra ang nag-una sa first round (“I didn’t expect such win for I knew my opponent took the lead in the first round),“ said Jerson Baclohan Jr. of Mandaue City Division after he pinned down Rhio Rotsen Montebon, of the Cebu Province in the second round of the 48-50 kgs. boxing match held at Bohol Quality (BQ) Atrium, Tagbilaran City, day two of the 2018 CVIRAA Meet.
In the onset of the game, the referee, Ronnie J. Abellana, gave his instructions to both Baclohan and Montebon who fiercely readied themselves for round one. As the game continued, Montebon from the blue corner aggressively generated a series of powerful punches that made the boxer from the red corner show let –go gestures as he covered himself while receiving those attacks.
Montebon’s agility and aggressive offenses ended the round with a decision of the judges in favor of him for the number of hits he made against Baclohan.
Round two revved up with the continued hammer strikes still from Montebon.
The bout went on with unstoppable left and right punches as Baclohan reverberated with bouncing rhythm and was cornered clinging to the ring. Shortly, at 1: 17 minutes. Baclohan released his overhand punch that hurt Montebon on his right jaw and knocked him down.
The viewers were shouting and chanting with delight for that action -packed thrilled moment of the second round. Montebon looked abashed, hurt, and helpless that the medics readily assisted him in gaining back his strength and composure.
Apparently, he displayed a weary spirit to continue the game. It was then that the referee concluded the boxing match with the declaration of Jerson Baclohan Jr. as the winner by knockdown. “Nakalitan ra ko…pag-alinggat nako naa na ko sa ubos ug nabati nako ang kasakit sa akong likod.”(“I was caught by surprise when I found myself being knocked down and felt the severe pain on my back.”), Montebon expressed during an interview.

Baclohan advances for the semi-final.
