What Causes Flats in Mountain Bike Tires?
If you’ve ever sat on the side of a trail pulling thorns out of your tire while your buddies disappear over the next ridge, you already know: flats happen. But not all flats are created equal—and not all of them are your fault. Well, some are.
most flats boil down to one of four things: sharp objects, impact damage, low tire pressure
The most common culprit is puncture damage from thorns, glass, or sharp rocks. XC riders are especially familiar with this—you’re flying along a hardpack trail, and suddenly you’re losing air from a tiny sidewall nick or a tread puncture. Without a breaker layer or decent sealant, these sneak attacks get you every time. A puncture-resistant tire typically uses a high-density material beneath the tread to stop sharp debris from reaching the tube or inner layers of the casing.
