Everest Base Camp Is Melting Its Own Ground
Everest Base Camp used to be a handful of canvas tents and not much else. Today it is a seasonal city on ice.
A new peer reviewed study has revealed something climbers rarely think about while chasing the summit. The camp itself is quietly melting the glacier beneath it.
During the 2023 spring season, about 2,127 climbers, guides, cooks and support staff lived at Base Camp for nearly 50 days. Nearly 1,600 tents stretched across 26.5 hectares of the Khumbu Glacier, a footprint researchers describe as a true seasonal settlement.
Running that settlement takes serious fuel. Operators burned through 824 gas cylinders, almost 19,000 litres of kerosene and over 5,000 litres of petrol in a single season. That fuel use released nearly 96 tonnes of carbon dioxide and generated enough heat to melt an estimated 2,338 tonnes of glacier ice on its own.
Add in human waste discharged onto the glacier, and the total potential melt from Base Camp activity climbs to roughly 3 million kilograms of ice and snow in one season alone.
Scientists are clear that global warming remains the primary force driving glacier loss across the Himalayas. But they say the sheer concentration of people, fuel and heat in one small area is creating a local hotspot, right beneath one of the busiest parts of the mountain.
Satellite data going back to 1991 backs this up. Land temperatures at the campground have risen almost twice as fast as the glacier surfaces around it.
The researchers say it strengthens the case for eventually moving Base Camp off the glacier entirely.
Comfort has crept higher and higher on Everest, from heated dining tents to bakeries and satellite internet. This study asks a hard question. What is that comfort costing the mountain itself.
