Meet lolo sleep and lolo pickleball. aka my dad and father in law.
Lolo sleep is 82yo, favorite past time is bingeing Ukraine/Iran updates on YT. Lolo pickleball is 58, plays pickleball - nag chachampion, nag ggym na din.
Lolo sleep had an accident last Saturday. he fell while playing with his apo. but before continuing, a little background. lolo sleep well, sleeps a lot. I call him a “lion” not because he’s the king of the jungle, but because he sleeps 16-20h a day 🦁. a fitting moniker since he’s married to the LIONESS (a story for another time). thankfully, the fall was the slow motion kind, like a baby deer stumbling learning how to walk. His knee took most of the fall, but just inches from the floor, his face struck the tiles before his reflexes could get his hand up to protect him. Shout out to MOA’s guard and clinic staff. they were quick and the clinic is well equipped. My dad got a minor scratch at the nose, a small bukol on the forehead and swelling on his right knee. Thank God t’was nothing serious. But the sad part is his realization “di na ko pwede makipag laro kina Yuno”. What happened was a wake up call. Is it too late for him? for an 82yo to regain some muscle and still be functional or is this the start of the usual deterioration of an old body. I honestly don’t know. but what I told him on the ride home “the next decade of your life depends on you, kung anong gagawin mo simula ngayon ang mag didikta kung kumportable ba ang buhay mo or magiging dependent ka na hangat sa may mag huhugas na sa pwet mo”. I told him to start small, go back in the habit of walking every night with my mom. then some simple drills he can do at home like standing up from a chair for reps. and try to keep his hands busy - something I learned from the Japanese centenarians.
Quiz Time. 📝⏳
If lolo pickleball continued his active lifestyle until 82 and beyond, do you think he will still be able to play with his apo?
However young or old you are now. Pag 80 ka na, do you wanna be able to play with your apo?
Pag 90 ka na, do you prefer wiping your own ass or papa punas mo sa iba?
You already know the answer. It’s the “doing”, that’s the hard part.
God will steer but YOU MUST ROW.
For the titos, titas, lolos, and lolas, mornings are usually less crowded. We have coaches who can guide you. Muscle is the key for a comfortable life especially on our twilight years. Best time to start was 10 years ago, second best time to start is TODAY. so pick up a dumbbell, a paddle, or even do Hyrox! (I mean, if Ai-ai delas Alas could do it right?) just start moving!!
