🌟 FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT! 🏉📚 Meet Mr. Tei David from Baruni Primary School!

Ever wondered what happens when Rugby League meets the classroom? 🏉➡️📚

Today, we introduce you to Mr. Tei David, a teacher from Baruni Primary School, who shares his experience of how the NRL League Bilong Laif (LBL) Program has made a positive difference in his teaching and in the behaviour of his students.

For Mr. Tei, League Bilong Laif is not just about getting children active and playing rugby league. It has given him new ideas and practical ways to integrate the lessons and values from the program into his classroom teaching.

👏 One of the biggest changes he has seen is in the way students understand and practise our core values — especially TEAMWORK.

Students are learning that teamwork isn't only important on the rugby field. It is also important in the classroom, when working with their friends, respecting one another and helping each other.

📚 Teamwork in the classroom.
❤️ Teamwork in everyday life.

And the results? Positive changes in how students behave, interact and treat each other at school. 🙌

That is what makes League Bilong Laif so special — we are not just teaching children how to play. We are using sport to teach life.

📍 Where is Baruni Primary School?

Baruni Primary School is located in Baruni, in the National Capital District of Papua New Guinea, west of Port Moresby. Baruni is a Motu-Koitabu community along the coastline and the school serves children from Baruni and surrounding communities.

🏉 NRL IN PNG – LEAGUE BILONG LAIF (LBL) PROGRAM
For the past 12 years going 13, NRL in PNG has been using the power of rugby league to make a positive difference in the lives of young people across Papua New Guinea through The League Bilong Laif (LBL) Program.
The program uses rugby league as a Vehicle to teach important life skills and values that young people can carry with them both on and off the field:

The League Bilong Laif program is proudly supported by the Australian Government, helping NRL in PNG reach schools and communities and create positive opportunities for children through sport.

Continuing our lead-up to International Safe Sport Day tomorrow, we're spotlighting another Team Up Safeguarding Champion - Mary Mahuk, Lead Social Impact & Inclusion Ambassador for the Vanuatu Cricket Association and Appeal Against Violence Program Manager.

Mary reminds us that safeguarding children is safeguarding the spirit of sport, helping ensure every child feels safe, respected and empowered to reach their full potential.

Appeal Against Violence is supported through the Australian Government's Team Up program.

🏉 INTERNATIONAL SAFE SPORT DAY 2026 🏉🛡️

“Safeguarding Should Protect Every Child Involved in Sport”

📣 Campaign Action Call: “STAND UP. SPEAK OUT. PLAY YOUR PART.”

NRL in PNG’s League Bilong Laif Program joined communities across Papua New Guinea to recognise International Safe Sport Day 2026, promoting the important message that every child involved in sport has the right to be safe, respected, included and protected from harm.

This year’s campaign theme, “Safeguarding Should Protect Every Child Involved in Sport,” reminds us that safeguarding is not the responsibility of one person or organisation — it is everyone’s responsibility.

As part of the International Safe Sport Day activities, League Bilong Laif conducted safeguarding awareness activities across the four regions where our program operates:

📍 Goroka – Eastern Highlands Province
📍 Kokopo – East New Britain Province
📍 Lae – Morobe Province
📍 Port Moresby – National Capital District

The activities brought together children, school students, teachers, coaches, community leaders, volunteers and other members of the community to learn more about safeguarding and the important role each of us plays in making sport a safe environment.

Through fun and interactive sport-based activities, participants learned about:

👀 How to recognise safe and unsafe behaviours
🗣️ The importance of speaking out when something does not feel right
🤝 Respect, inclusion, teamwork and kindness
👥 Identifying trusted adults who children can talk to
❤️ The right of every child to participate in sport in a safe and supportive environment
