: Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers assistant coach Wellington Albert has confirmed that outstanding players from the 2025 NCD Governor’s Cup will be selected into the Vipers squad, with the same coaching structure expected to remain in place for the 2026 season.
Mr Albert made the announcement last Friday at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium during the official launch of the Governor’s Cup tournament.
He said the Governor’s Cup continues to serve as a major talent identification platform, particularly for rugby league players aspiring to progress through the national pathway.
“The best players from this tournament will be selected into the Vipers club,” Mr Albert said.
The Governor’s Cup tournament features three sporting codes — rugby league, netball and soccer, attracting hundreds of players across the National Capital District.
Mr Albert urged rugby league players to compete with purpose and discipline, stressing that the tournament should be viewed as more than just an opportunity to win prize money.
“Do not play just to win the prize or for the sake of having fun. Set your goals high — aim first for the Vipers, then PNG Hunters, then the Kumuls, and eventually our new NRL team, the PNG Chiefs,” he said.
He said with the establishment of the PNG Chiefs, young players now have a complete and clear rugby league career pathway from grassroots to professional level.
Mr Albert also revealed that members of the Vipers coaching staff will be present at match venues throughout the tournament to identify and select promising talent.
Referring to the 2025 season, he said 20 players who played for the NCD Vipers were selected through the Governor’s Cup, highlighting the tournament’s proven success in player development.
He thanked NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop for sponsoring the tournament, noting its importance in positively engaging young people during the festive season.
“This initiative brings young people together. Without it, many could be involved in activities that may harm their lives and their communities,” Mr Albert said.
Meanwhile, Acting Assistant Police Commissioner for NCD and Central Police Command, Benjamin Turi, has confirmed that police personnel have been deployed at all Governor’s Cup venues.
ACP Turi said police will provide security and ensure public safety throughout the competition, particularly to prevent and respond to any incidents of fighting related to the tournament.
He assured the public that police will work closely with organisers to ensure the games are conducted in a safe and peaceful environment.
