The National,

THE National Souths Basketball League (NSBL) will be in Port Moresby from September 25-28.
Elite players will be allowed to take part but only in a restricted role.
NSBL president Silas Nicky said players from the Papua New Guinea Men’s Basketball League could play, provided they were released from their clubs.
He said teams in the Souths tournament were only allowed two PMBL players, with only one player allowed on the court at any given time.
Nicky said the league’s executive board had confirmed the player eligibility rules for the four-day tournament to be held in the nation’s capital.
Sixteen teams including five Port Moresby-based basketball clubs will take part in the championship.
The city-based teams are PNGIPA Souths, Remix Souths, Loho (Laloki High School), Eight-Mile, UPNG Souths and Sogeri.
Other teams that will take part are Sumale Souths (Gobe), Usana (Lake Kutubu), Pangia Souths, Undiri (Imbongu), Hela Souths, Mendi Menjals, Hagen Welgris, Lae Souths, Esso Souths (Wabag) and Oro Wizards (Oro).
Silas said the deadline for payment of the K1000 registration fee is September 19.
This will allow organisers to have the venues and draws ready by September 22.
Nicky acknowledged the support of National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, as well as the National Airport Corporation (NAC) and the major sponsor Kutubu Security Services (KSS).
The theme of the 2014 NSBL championship is: Keep violence out of sports.
Nicky said cash prizes of K10,000 would go to the men’s and women’s champions while K5000, K3000 and K1500 would go to the runners-up, third-place finisher and fourth-placed team in that order.

Exodus douse Flames 82-73

PAPUA New Guinean Men’s Basketball League reigning premiers Exodus ended Southern Flames’ six-game winning streak with a convincing 82-73 victory on Saturday.
Exodus showed they are still one of the top contenders with the nine-point win.
The action at the Filipino Association’s indoor court in Gordon saw Exodus dominate the newcomers in the last two quarters and the win came as a morale booster after organisers stripped the reigning premiers of four competition points because of late payment of affiliation fees.
Exodus trailed 32-27 at the end of the second quarter but finished off strongly, leading 52-50 at the end of the third quarter before adding 30 points in the final frame to leave the Flames in their wake.
Exodus set the tempo from the start with skipper Dia Muri and guard Peter Davani directing the play well while Junior Tokiala top-scoring with 20 points.
Flames’ Purari Muri (17 points), Moses Lune (15) and Charles Parapa (12) stood out for their team.
Flames Muri, Lune and Parapa lacked support play off the bench and their penchant to take risky plays did not work this time.
Flames coach Moi Muri tried to get his side to go up a gear but some great defence in the ring saw the Southerners denied time and again

Referees told to be impartial

THE microscope is now focused on Papua New Guinea Men’s Basketball League referees to be consistent in their decisions.
On Tuesday, PMBL chairman John Vere, commissioner Larry Miro and club officials deliberated on the issue and passed a resolution.
As a result, a referee was demoted to the minor division due to a poor standard of officiating.
Consequently, referees were cautioned to be impartial.
It was highlighted that some referees had strong associations with some clubs and it was affecting their impartiality.
Club officials claimed certain officials were biased.
All agreed that the standard of the competition would start to improve once the recommendations were implemented.
In this weekend’s matches, competition leaders Southern Flames will be out to maintain their unbeaten run against the Moresby-West Jokers.
Flames, with the experience of big guns Purari Muri, Charles Parapa and Joe Elavo, have the edge over opposites Gary Suve, Tom Mare, Ali Aila Polo and Daniel Aila Kone.
Despite losing to the Flames in Round 1, the Jokers have bounced back and are hoping to cause an upset.

THE Papua New Guinea Men’s Basketball League competition leaders Southern Flames were given a scare by Saints before winning 105-102 at the Filipino Association indoor complex on Sunday night.
In the other match, Moresby West Jokers upset reigning premiers Exodus, 102-100.
Flames’ unbeaten streak stretched to five games and the Southern Highlands team top the table on 10 points followed by the Tamaraws 6, Exodus 6, Saints 4, Chariots 2 and the Jokers 2.
The Flames were too strong and led from the first quarter.
Saints to their credit, stayed in touch throughout the game with quarter scores being: 22-14, 46-39 and 73-71.
Purari Muri, Charles Parapa, Richard Mako and Wayne Levongo shone for the Flames
