Communities across East New Britain might notice military activity this June, as Papua New Guinea (PNG) and partner nations work together to safely remove explosive remnants of war.
From 1 to 20 June 2026, the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF), alongside the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and partners from Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, will conduct disposal operations across the Gazelle, Kokopo, and Rabaul districts.
The operation, known as Operation Render Safe, focuses on locating and safely disposing of thousands of unexploded ordnance, such as World War II-era bombs, grenades, or artillery shells. By removing these hazards, the operation will significantly improve the safety of local communities.
East New Britain communities are encouraged to follow safety advice during the operation period.
Operation Render Safe continues to play a vital role in protecting lives and supporting safer communities. Australia is proud to work side by side with PNG and regional partners to address shared security challenges.
