Happy Mother’s Day to All Mothers of Sugu Valley💯 🌸

From Sugu Peace Basketball Association, we send love, respect, and gratitude to every mother in Sugu Valley. 🏀

You are the first coaches, the first protectors, and the first teachers of our community. You rise before dawn, work without rest, and give without condition. You carry the weight of family, garden, and home, yet you still find strength to encourage, to pray, and to believe in the next generation. 👏

Your love is the foundation of our peace. Your hands have raised leaders, players, students, and builders. Every game we play, every youth we mentor, every step we take toward unity — it starts with the values you planted in us. ❣️

💯Today, we honor you.🥳
For your patience, your sacrifice, your quiet courage, and your unshakable faith. May this Mother’s Day bring you rest, joy, and the recognition you deserve.📱

Sugu Peace Basketball Association stands with you.🥳
We are your sons and daughters, and we will continue to build a community that reflects the love you show us every day.

Sports, peace and youth leadership — united amidst discord.
Happy Mother’s Day, Sugu Valley Mamas.♥️

From the Village to the National Level 🌿🏀

Sugu Peace Basketball Association is proud to be named a Finalist for Community Sports Initiative of the Year at the 2026 SP Sports Awards🙏

This journey started in the heart of Sugu Valley, Katiloma, Kagua Erave District— on dusty courts, with handmade jerseys, and with one goal: _unity amidst discord_. What began as a village initiative to bring young men and women together through basketball is now standing on a national stage.

To every player, coach, elder, and supporter in Sugu Valley: this is your win. Your belief, your hustle, your commitment to peace through sport carried us here.
To the voters and SP Sports Awards committee: thank you for recognizing grassroots work that often goes unseen. You have shown that community sports matter.
To the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundationand PNG Olympic Committee: thank you for championing _diversity, unity, and dreams_ under this year’s theme.

We started with nothing but hope and a basketball. Today, we represent Sugu Valley on a national platform.
*From the village to the national level — we are still building, still uniting, still inspiring.*

A total of 261 nominations were received for the 2026 SP Sports Awards, with 33 finalists selected across multiple categories, showcasing Papua New Guinea’s top sporting talent and contributors.

Chairman of the selection panel Warwick Vele said narrowing down the finalists was highly challenging due to the strong quality and volume of nominations. He noted that athletes, teams, coaches, officials, and volunteers from both domestic and international competitions were considered.

A Legacy of Leadership and Investment in Mendi’s Youth💯

In 2018, I had the honor of serving as captain of the Eastern Sugu Ci**rs when we won the *Mendi Works Managers Basketball League Championship*, securing the Junior Kupulus Trophy. 🏆

This achievement was more than a sporting victory. It was the product of belief, discipline, and strategic investment. Our success was made possible through the sponsorship and unwavering support of my father, Yoko Tasa, who understood that investing in young men through basketball builds stronger communities.🤔

That championship proved a critical point: *When leaders invest in structured sport, they invest in peace, purpose, and future leadership.* Our team did not just lift a trophy — we lifted the standard for what Mendi’s youth can achieve when given opportunity and trust.

Today, through the Sugu Peace Basketball Association, we are scaling that same model. We are not seeking handouts. We are inviting partners to co-invest in a proven system that develops captains, champions, and responsible citizens.🌿✅️

The court taught us discipline. My father’s sponsorship taught us that someone believes in us. Together, they created champions. 💪

This is our heritage. This is our blueprint. Let us build on it — together.🌿

The NSBL Tournament is for Southern Highlands. So the host should be in Southern Highlands.💪

Like many associations, we are from remote areas. It is hard for us to seek sponsors. It is even harder to afford Port Moresby. The cost of travel, accommodation, and food in POM is too expensive for teams from the Highlands.

As Sugu Peace Basketball Association, we are sorry to say that we did not take part in last year’s NSBL, and we will also miss this year’s tournament.* Not because we don’t have the talent. Not because our boys don’t have the heart. But because the cost is too high.🌿

We use basketball to restore peace in Sugu Valley. We use shovels and balls to rebuild our community. But when the main tournament is held far from the people it’s meant for, the remote teams get left behind.🌿

If NSBL is truly for Southern Highlands, bring it home. Host it in Mendi, Ialibu, Pangia, or Kagua. Let the Highlands boys play on Highlands soil. That’s how you empower youth. That’s how you keep the money in our province. That’s how you make the tournament fair.🏀

We support peace through sports. We just need the system to support us back.🙏

Thank you to everyone who believes in peace through sports. But the truth is, Sugu Peace Basketball Association needs support.💯✋️

For too long we spent resources on compensation and conflict. We left sports behind because we didn’t see its power. Now we know sports can heal families, unite tribes, and strengthen our community better than any payback ever could.💪

We’re doing the work in Sugu Valley with our bare hands and basketballs. But we can’t do it alone. We need leaders, elites, businesses, and good people to stand with us. Support with uniforms, balls, transport, or funds. Every toea counts. Every voice matters.

🌿If you support youth, you support peace. If you support SPBA, you support Sugu Valley’s future.🙏
