In partnership 🤝 with the Mokarran Protection Society, 𝗧𝗢𝗣𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗮 had the pleasure of hosting students from the Sea Education Association (https://sea.edu/) who are conducting a research program focused on exploring, understanding, and managing marine environments aboard the Robert Seamans 2, the best-equipped scientific sailing school vessel in the USA. ✨

Our team in Rangiroa guided the students during the snorkeling 🤿 session, allowing them to collect the necessary data for their study on coral reefs. Claire-Sophie, the supervisor and marine biologist specializing in corals, provided her expertise to give them essential information during their activity.

🐠 Each year, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀, known as Hāpu'u in Tahitian, gather in the passes of Fakarava to breed. This exceptional event brings together hundreds of groupers and sharks, as well as numerous divers who are passionate about this unique phenomenon.

🦈 The 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (Sphyrna mokarran) is an impressive species, reaching up to 6 meters in length and weighing 500 kg! It inhabits temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans and primarily preys on fish, rays and squids.

𝗧𝗢𝗣𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 🤝 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 Mokarran Protection Society

📍 Based in Rangiroa, the Mokarran Protection Society's mission is to study and protect the great hammerhead shark. In danger of extinction, this shark is one of the least known species in the world. The objective is to better understand this animal and to implement all possible means for the preservation of this emblematic species. 💧
