Oystercatchers/Tōrea 🐚🐦

Oystercatchers are a common sight along New Zealand’s coastlines. Their most distinctive feature is their long, bright orange bill, which they use to forage for small invertebrates among rocks and along the shoreline. They’re especially skilled at feeding on bivalve molluscs, using the tip of their bill to carefully pry shells open.

These birds typically mate for life and share the responsibility of raising their young. However, their breeding success can be quite low, as eggs and chicks are vulnerable to predators, flooding, large tides, and human disturbance.

During breeding season, it’s important that we all do our part to protect them—by keeping a safe distance, avoiding nesting areas. With a little care, we can help give these coastal locals a better chance to thrive.🌏💙

Meet the Kororā (Little Blue Penguin) 🐧

The world’s smallest penguin, standing at just 25cm tall and weighing a little over 1kg.

We’re lucky to often spot these tiny locals on our trips out to Motueka Island—popping up briefly from the water before disappearing again in a flash.

During the day, they’re busy fishing, feeding, or resting in their burrows. Under the cover of darkness, they return to land, rarely seen as they quietly make their way ashore.

Nesting season runs from May to June, and these determined little penguins can walk up to 3.5km to find the perfect spot. Adults also come ashore to moult, shedding old feathers and growing new waterproof ones—a process that takes about two weeks, during which they can’t swim.

Kororā are sadly in decline and are now mostly found on offshore islands, safe from predators like dogs, cats, and ferrets, and away from human disturbance.

They are protected, and nesting boxes are set up to help provide safe places to raise their young 💙

The Pōhutukawa — New Zealand’s iconic Christmas tree — bursts into bloom around December, covering itself in vibrant red flower clusters. These striking blooms are an important source of nectar for native birds, bringing the coastline to life.🐦🌱

Growing up to 15–20 metres tall, with canopies that can spread as wide as 35 metres, these trees are just as impressive in shape as they are in colour. Their long, twisting roots scour the cliffs for pockets of moisture and soil, often mistaken for branches as they cling to the rugged coastline.🌊🌳

We’ve spotted Pōhutukawa throughout our journey around the bay, thriving right by the ocean. They’re perfectly adapted to coastal life, with aerial roots that absorb moisture from the air and tough, waxy leaves that repel saltwater and reduce water loss.

Te Wiki O Te Taiao – Conservation Week 🌿

Whai Keo / Eagle Ray

These majestic creatures glide effortlessly through the water by their pointed pectoral fins giving them a wing-like grace. We’re lucky to often spot these in Stingray Bay during our kayak tours, where they feed on invertebrates hidden in the seafloor—detected using their incredible electro-sensory organs.

Eagle rays invest a huge amount of energy into raising their young. They develop their pups entirely within their bodies before giving birth to live young that are fully independent from the moment they enter the moana.

Let’s continue to look after these taonga of the ocean so future generations can witness their beauty. 💙

There’s something pretty special about the Coromandel — a place where you can really feel that connection between people and the environment. We’re proud to be supporting the GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL – Kaitiaki initiative led by Destination Hauraki Coromandel 🌱💚

So far, over 1,200 trees have been donated by local businesses — all giving back to this epic place we’re lucky enough to call home. With the support of our visitors, we’re able to play a small part in looking after the land that gives us so much 🙌

Check out the video below to hear from the local businesses about why they’re involved, and how tourism can give back!
