The sound of willow on leather once again graced the fabled fields of Moewai Country Club on Sunday as the Barracudas opened their season with a local derby against the aging yet dangerous Tairua Stingrays.
With several regulars unavailable due to their wives/partners forcing them to carry out domestic duties, or in Charlie Best's case a trip to Raglan to purchase lentil nut loaf, the Cudas fielded nine players until Swindles and Kev arrived to help out the lads.
Batting first the Bay Boys made a cautious start as Stretch Corkill and Thumper Courtenay navigated the first few overs with very little technique or ability. Thumper got himself out as only he knows how. This, believe it or not, brought somebody else to the crease and when that person got out, those circumstances presented another person with the opportunity to have a bat, which apparently happens a bit, and so on and henceforth.
Dylan "Lurch" Lennox strode confidently to the middle and proclaimed "WE NEED TO UP THE RUN RATE!!". He was clean bowled first ball playing the worst shot ever witnessed at the Country Club. He is batting at 11 next week.
Beavis Menzies smashed a six year old back over his head into the airfield for six. What a bully.
While all this was happening, Corkill top edged a vicious delivery into his eye socket and compiled a patient 30 runs off 667 balls to anchor the innings.
The Cudas tailed wagged with Kev and Ricki Ticki Tavi getting them through to a par score of 167/9.
Massively embarrassed by his batting effort, Lurch took the new ball and ripped the Stingrays top order apart faster than he rips the lid off a tub of Vaseline when his pink bits start chaffing.
Uncle Fester Roberts returned remarkable bowling figures of 3 for not many. He can't bat and is a liability in the field.
Thumper held on to a one handed screamer at gully to break a dangerous partnership.
The match was in the balance but the Cudas held their catches to dismiss Tairua about 18 runs short of their target.
A win to kick off the season π πͺ
The Cudas are away to the Tairua Mantarays at Kennedy Park, Pauanui next Sunday.
Until such time, fins up, up the Cudas ππ₯π₯βΌοΈ
