Good info for spearos

Every spearo knows you don’t shoot red moki. But on the off-chance you don’t know, here’s the reason why.

Red moki are slow-growing, long-lived reef fish that tend to live in pairs, often mating for life. They hold tight to their patch of reef. Take one, and you often remove both the fish and the functions they provide. They’re classic reef regulators, grazing on species including small kina. Moki help keep things in balance, and once they’re gone, it can take a long time for that patch to recover.

If you’re keen for a feed and tempted to take a moki - consider a parore instead. They’re far more abundant, better suited to harvest, and you’re not pulling a keystone species out of the system.

Good spearfishing isn’t just about what you can shoot. It’s about knowing what you should leave behind. FishCare is about making those calls in the water so the reef continues to thrive long after you’ve gone home.
