How does equine assisted learning support personal growth?

Sometimes it’s easier to look at things from a different angle… to see it play out in front of us, or to explore it through metaphor and story.

Working with horses in a personal development setting creates space for that. Horses have a way of becoming a mirror. They can reflect back thoughts, feelings, and emotions we might not even realise are there.

Equine assisted learning is an opportunity to observe, feel, and to understand ourselves a little more as our own story unfolds.

Sabi (4 yrs old) has had a slower start than many horses I’ve known or started under saddle myself. That’s simply how things have unfolded with him due to life’s other adventures. I’ve always believed, and remind my clients - to trust these natural pauses in a young horse’s education. They often arrive at exactly the right time.
However, it has been really nice working with Sabi again this week, he’s a horse I look forward to seeing each day - just as it should be!

In the weekend we wrapped up Youth Search and Rescue for the year and foreseeable future.

Working alongside our tamariki as their L1 and L2 instructor has been a real highlight be over the last 2yrs. Watching their confidence grow, seeing them step up to challenges, and supporting their adventure into search and rescue has been something truly special. The value this programme brings to our tamariki goes far beyond skills and training; it builds resilience, teamwork, leadership, and a connection to community that lasts well beyond the programme.

A huge thank you to all the students, whānau, volunteers, and supporters who have been part of this journey. Your enthusiasm, commitment, and belief in our tamariki are what make programmes like this possible.

Ngā mihi nui, and here’s to the positive impact YSAR has planted in our future responders and leaders 🙌

What is Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)?

Equine Assisted Learning is a unique and experiential way to build confidence, improve communication, and develop self-awareness through meaningful interactions with horses.

There’s no riding involved. Instead, you’ll work alongside horses in nature, learning from their honest feedback and calm presence. It’s powerful, grounding, and often quite eye-opening.

“A horse doesn’t need words to teach; its actions speak of ancient wisdom.” ~ Unknown

Coal Pencils

One of my favourite fire craft activities tried and tested today in preparation for upcoming Bush School days.

As we sat around the fire, shaping our coal pencils and sharing stories, we were reminded of how fire connects us and the way it draws us together.

The flames of our small campsite fires invites reflection, creativity, and community, just a few aspects we love about Bush School.
