HER STORIES
What if your daughter research any woman she could choose?
Who would she pick?
Earlier this year, I asked the girls in my HerStories classes who they wanted to learn about.
The list was HUGE.
And I realised there was no way I could teach all of those women while their curiosity was still alive.
So I created something different.
HerStory: Your Research 💫
Instead of me choosing the woman and teaching her story, each student chooses a woman who fascinates her — and I teach her how to research that story for herself.
But this isn’t just “go off and Google someone.”
I give them a clear structure to work with as they explore:
✨ her childhood and adolescence
✨ the world she grew up in
✨ family and social influences
✨ opportunities and barriers
✨ turning points in her life
✨ personality and individual strengths
✨ the impact she made and the legacy she left
They’ll also have the opportunity to bring in some of the psychology and sociology concepts we’ve explored this year, things like socialisation, family structure, social roles and different forms of capital.
And they won’t be doing it alone.
We begin together, they have independent research time, each student gets a one-to-one session with me, then we come back together to share ideas before finishing with our HerStories showcase.
The final project might be a PowerPoint, poster or another way of sharing what they’ve discovered. There’s no requirement to stand up and give a scary formal presentation!
I want them to experience what it feels like to follow their own curiosity, research something properly, develop their own ideas — and then think:
How can I share what I’ve learned with someone else?
