WINTER NEWSLETTER #7

What a fine crisp morning today has brought. Lets hope it sticks around for a while, let the ground dry up.

Last weekend's run was done in the sunshine after a dodgy morning of weather. What a great spot for a bit of a walk, jog or run. Yes, the line is blurry, but running and jogging are different. Ultimately, all jogging is running, but not all running is jogging. The difference comes down to speed, intensity, and purpose. I jog, but if Carolyn or Mike are about to lap me I move to a run, and then they still pass me 😆. Please find attached the results, photos and a tracking video of the run.

SATURDAY 13 JUNE - BARGE PARK

This Saturday 13th is the second of the Cross Country series at Barge Park. Good luck to y'all who are attending. Please remember a bit of afternoon tea.

SUNDAY 28 JUNE - WAIPU CAVES FARM PARK

Speaking of great places to run/walk, an event at Waipu Caves Farm Park (not to be confused with the Waipu Caves) has been brought to my attention. I have stayed at this park on a school camp and then went back to stay in the caravan and explore the place further with the family. It is a stunning block of land and we are so lucky that Ian and Cindy have opened it up to the public. And now they have conjured up an event! Please follow the link and check it out.

✨🏃‍♀️ ATHLETICS WHANGĀREI – LET’S LIGHT THE WAY! 🏃‍♂️✨

We’re calling on our amazing athletics community to get behind a cause that truly matters for Whangārei 💛

Join us for the Hato Hone St John Te Tai Tokerau Northland Community Light the Way 5km Run/Walk and help support a new ambulance station for our region 🚑

📍 Hātea River Loop
📅 Saturday 13 June
🕠 From 5:00pm

This fun, family-friendly event is your chance to run, walk, or jog the loop while lighting up the night — so grab your brightest gear, glow sticks, fairy lights (the brighter the better!) and let’s make it a night to remember ✨

Our current ambulance station has been serving Whangārei since 1977 and is no longer fit for purpose. After every call, crews need a safe place to rest, reset and be ready for the next emergency — and this new station will help make that possible.

Thanks to incredible community support, over $2.4 million has already been raised… but we’re not there yet.

👉 Let’s finish the job together.

Bring your whānau, your teammates, and your club spirit – and let’s show up strong for those who show up for us every day.

🔥 WE NEED YOU, ATHLETICS WHANGĀREI!

WINTER NEWSLETTER #5

Tomorrow, Saturday 30 May we’re off to One Tree Point (Papich Road) for our next adventure.

Carolyn has kindly shared directions, parking info, and where to find the nearest loos — all below 😊

Expect a bit of everything on the course: gravel, bush, sand, grass.

Each lap is 2.76 km, perfect whether you’re doing one lap or four. Kid‑friendly too.

Directions:
Heading south: turn left from SH1 onto Port Marsden Highway (SH15)
• Left onto Marsden Bay Drive
• About 1km along, turn right into Papich Road (no exit)
• Parking is along the road — the car park is small but there’s plenty of space roadside
• Closest toilets: Marsden Marina (1km), Rauiri Drive near the 4 Square & bakery

Last Saturday’s run was such a joy. The Waimahanga track always brings back memories — biking there in the 80s with my brother and friends, never realising it used to be a railway line. No wonder it’s so straight, with that long sweeping bend. It once carried limestone and other materials to the port, and even had a 300‑metre bridge called “Gull Roost” with a lifting span for boats. Love discovering the stories beneath our feet.

WINTER NEWSLETTER #4

Thank you for coming along to the first of the Barge Park Cross Country Series. It was great to see so many people having fun in the mud!! It was a tough course and the start and finish being uphill made it tougher. It did look like it might rain so we settled for the shelter hence the slight change in course.

Thank you everyone for providing the afternoon tea and the ladies for their willingness to help organise it all.

It was great to see Pam Langton up and about again. Nigel is starting his recovery from a fractured femur at the knee end. We wish him well and look forward to seeing him back.
