ORLD VISION 40 HOUR CHALLENGE — One of Our Own Playing His Part!

Offline for a short time, impact for a lifetime.

It’s fantastic to see one of our own young developing players, OWEN PRINSLOO, stepping up and playing his part in support of the World Vision 40 Hour Challenge.

Owen is taking on the challenge by walking the Town Basin loop (Saturday 20th June to Sunday 21st June) to help raise funds so families in the Solomon Islands can access the seeds, tools and skills they need to grow crops and feed their children in a changing climate.

This cause matters. Across the Pacific region, 1 in 6 children are living in severe food poverty and Owen, along with his friends, is determined to help make a difference.

Whoop whoop — congratulations, Peter Bone! 👍🏼🧢👏

Peter is being recognised for his outstanding contribution to City Cricket Club since becoming involved in 2018. A dedicated Executive Committee member from 2020 to 2026, Peter has generously given his time across all levels of the game. He has served as Team Manager for youth cricket (2022–2023), supported Northland youth teams from Under 16 through to Under 19, and taken on Team Manager responsibilities for senior cricket from 2023 to 2026, alongside coaching senior teams in the 2025/2026 season.

Peter is a crucial part of the club, consistently going above and beyond to support both players and operations. Known for his reliability and willingness to step in wherever needed, he often solves problems behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly each week. His passion for cricket, commitment to developing players, and genuine care for the club environment make him a highly valued volunteer. Recognised as Most Innovative Club Member in 2025/2026 and Club Man of the Year in 2023/2024, Peter’s contribution has had a lasting and positive impact on City Cricket Club.

Shaye has made an outstanding contribution to City Cricket Club since 2023. As Team Manager for junior and youth cricket, an active Executive Committee member, and Junior and Youth Coordinator, Shaye has played a vital role in supporting the club and its young players. She consistently goes above and beyond, working tirelessly behind the scenes to organise teams, manage gear and uniforms, and ensure everything runs smoothly each week.

Shaye’s dedication, organisation, and willingness to help wherever needed have made her an invaluable part of the club. Most importantly, she ensures junior players have everything they need to succeed and enjoy their cricket. Her reliability, positive attitude, and genuine care for players, families, and volunteers make her a truly valued member of the club and highly deserving of this recognition.

Litchfield Brothers Enjoying Their Overseas Cricket Experience…..

City Cricket Club brothers Ben and Tommy Litchfield are currently plying their trade in England during the New Zealand off-season.

Ben is representing Purley Cricket Club in the Surrey Championship 4th Division, while Tommy is playing for Cobham Avorians Cricket Club in the 5th Division competition. Both are enjoying a busy schedule of T20 and one-day cricket.

Ben has made a top start to his campaign, contributing with both bat and ball. His performances include figures of 5/32 earlier in the season, along with scores of 60, 49 and a recent top score of 64. In that same match, he also claimed 2/61 to cap off a quality all-round performance.

Tommy has had a quieter start with the bat, with a highest score of 34, while also contributing with the ball. His best figures to date are 2/33 and he has picked up a further two wickets across separate matches.

Both lads are thoroughly enjoying the experience of playing multiple matches each week and immersing themselves in English club cricket. As the season enters its busiest period, they will be looking to build on their starts and produce some significant performances that go towards winning matches for their respective clubs.

BLAST FROM THE PAST #76

The old Cobham Oval has always been a spiritual home for our club and a venue woven into Northland cricket history.

Back in 1961, John Golightly was the Whangarei representative and Norman Wilson (pictured together) was the Northland representative on the Cobham Oval Board of Control, alongside Mayor Mr J.F. Johnson and Whangarei Borough Council Property and Parks Committee member Mr C.J. Homer. The Board of Control was the body charged with developing and establishing the ground that would go on to host generations of cricketers and countless memories.

The final match between a Cobham XI and a Northland XI played on Cobham Oval in April 2002 featured several City Cricket Club members who had served the club in various capacities throughout their careers, either as players, administrators, coaches, officials or supporters. It was a fitting farewell to a special ground and appropriately, it rained, just as it had for many important cricket fixtures held there over the years.

As Northern Advocate journalist Tim Eaves wrote at the time: "But the weather didn't dampen the enthusiasm of more than 30 of the best cricketers Northland has ever produced."

The match was played in great spirit, with plenty of banter, camaraderie and stories shared as players celebrated a venue on which they had spent so much of their cricketing lives. Following the game, a large function brought everyone together as the curtain came down on the old ground for the final time, a place rich in history, friendships, achievements and memories.

A great evening of community spirit and connection was enjoyed by past and present club members at this week’s quiz night hosted by the Judge House of Ale, with the chosen charity being the popular and highly successful ReSport Charitable Trust as it celebrated its third anniversary.

The Judge House of Ale, outstanding supporters of grassroots sport and the wider community, created a fantastic atmosphere as hosts, with more than 120 people filling the venue and embracing the spirit of the evening. It was terrific to see such a strong mix of community-minded people coming together, enjoying themselves and supporting a worthy cause.

A highlight of the night was the friendly rivalry between teams “Motley Crew”, made up of Colin Marshall, Marty Kimber, Ross Cooper, Craig Gunson, Brad Lang and Joey Yovich and the “City Slickers” team featuring Sean and Sharlene Nelson, Pete Bone, Raj Ananth, Claire Fleming and Rafe Fleming-Bone. Plenty of banter and competitive spirit flowed throughout the evening, with the experienced “Motley Crew” ultimately claiming bragging rights.

A huge thank you to The Judge House of Ale and the ReSport Charitable Trust for delivering such a successful event and to everyone who supported the evening. More than $9,000 was raised to support the important work ReSport continues to do collecting and distributing gently used and new sporting gear and equipment across the region.
