Hikurangi Pioneers vs Manaia Misfits

As part of a massive day at Hikurangi Rugby Club, our Golden Oldies Memorial Game will kick off before our Premier Women take on Pipiwai later in the day.

This special memorial match was created to honour and remember Eddie Vercoe alongside a respected Manaia player Ross Smith, bringing old mates together through rugby, memories, and community.

We are still looking for players to pull the boots back on:

✅ 35 years and over
✅ Bring black shorts, black socks & a mouthguard
✅ You’re in the team!

The team photo featured is from 1997 when Hikurangi played Marist during their clubrooms opening weekend at Kensington Park. Sadly, a number of players and the referee from that day are no longer with us, making this occasion even more meaningful as we remember those who helped shape our club and our game.

Come along for a great day of footy, reconnect with old teammates, share some laughs, and support our Hikurangi Women as they take on Pipiwai.

We’ve got games running from 9AM–11AM across both fields, plus plenty of yummy food and treats available throughout the day:

🏉 Manaia Junior Rugby – 2026 Season Registrations Closing Soon! 🏉

The 2026 rugby season is just around the corner, and we’re excited to welcome new and returning players to Manaia Junior Rugby Club!

If your child is aged 3–11, now is the time to get them registered and ready for a fantastic season of rugby. Whether they’re trying rugby for the first time or coming back for another year, our club is all about fun, teamwork, confidence and community.

📅 Season starts: Saturday 2nd May🏃 Trainings: Once a week starting in April🏉 Games: Every Saturday morning

🏉 Manaia Junior Rugby – Safe, Fun, and Confident Rugby!

We know some parents may feel nervous about their kids starting tackle rugby — and that’s completely natural. At Manaia Rugby Club, we introduce contact in a safe, structured, and confidence-building way.

✅ Player Safety First – Your child’s wellbeing is our top priority - player wellbeing is one we take seriously at every level of our club. Coaches are trained to recognise signs of injury, particularly head injuries, and we take a cautious, “if in doubt, sit them out” approach.

✅ Safe Tackling – Coaches are taught and teach correct body position, head placement, shoulder contact, and falling techniques before moving into full contact drills.

✅ Guided by Northland Rugby – Our training follows the latest best practices with special Tackle Box training for all under 8 and 9 players.

✅ Recommended headgear and compulsory mouth guards – Adds protection and confidence while learning contact skills.

✅ Positive Environment – Respect, teamwork, and resilience are at the heart of everything we do.

Come to our Rally Day this Wednesday from 5pm to pre-register, meet the coaches, ask questions, and see how we teach rugby safely.
