As a PT, I frequently get asked "What's the quickest way to get results"... especially at this time of year with summer just around the corner 🌞.

My response is a piece of advice I got from my PT when I first started training in 2018.

Losing weight and becoming strong and fit does not happen overnight. It takes time, consistency and patience. For safe, sustainable weight loss I generally recommend aiming for approx. 0.5kg per week.

Results won’t come overnight. The key is to be consistent, disciplined and most of all patient. There are no quick fixes. It may take several months to a year to reach your goals depending on what they are 🌱.

So, you have time and the results you are looking for will happen if you are consistent, patient, as well as disciplined.

However, this does not mean that you can take weeks off and expect to see results. It also does not mean that you don’t have to start right now. The best time to start is today! ⭐️

We often expect quick fixes to weight loss and get discouraged and want to quit when we don’t see immediate results.

But in reality, losing weight safely and effectively takes time.

Be patient and the results will come with hard work, consistency and discipline.

When people first start their fitness journey they list weight loss as being their primary reason to get into the gym. I understand that fully, I was overweight for years. I was the kid who found every excuse in the book to skip PE lessons at school. If any of my PE teachers found out I’m a personal trainer now they would probably be absolutely shocked!

The reason I became a PT was to help people improve their health & fitness in the short & long run. So, while weight loss can be an awesome goal to have , it’s also good to focus on long-term goals such as building muscle, getting stronger fitter and healthier so you reduce the risk of injury and illness etc.

I went to Tutukaka for my stepsons soccer tournament over the weekend. ⚽

I couldn’t do my usual training because I was away, but I made sure to get plenty of steps and focus on my non “exercise” related activity by walking around the area while sightseeing.

I also drank plenty of water, focused on my nutrition by bringing food from home and I got 9 hours of sleep each night. 💤

Here is another 30 minute group fitness class I designed and ran yesterday. I thought it would be fun to mix it up and make it a harder challenge for everyone in class.

AMRAP: As Many Rounds as Possible
The goal is to complete as many rounds of a group of exercises as possible within the given time frame.

EMOM: Every Minute on the Minute.
The goal is to complete the given number of reps for each exercise within a minute. The aim is to finish as quickly as possible within that minute so that you get a chance to rest before the next minute starts.

These styles are both a form of high-intensity interval training. They should feel uncomfortably challenged. But you will feel great once they are done!

I thought it would be fun to challenge my body differently this weekend, so I took a pole fitness class for the first time in 15 years to see what I remembered from when I used to do pole fitness in the US.

Turns out I had the strength, but my technique was rusty! Regardless, it was great to get out of the usual training routine in the gym and challenge my muscles differently.

I challenge you to find something that will challenge your body differently, it doesn’t have to be the typical gym workout!

As women, we are often under a significant pressure to look super skinny, and fit into society's idea of the “perfect female body type”. If we don't fit into that barbie mould, we are often judged negatively by those around us.

I am originally Indian, and I grew up in Hong Kong. I loved my time in Hong Kong, but I saw this happen all the time around me. Women were judged negatively if they were overweight, and a lot of these women would be signing up for treatments at the local weight loss clinics.

I myself was quite tempted on a number of occasions, but I realised that these clinics often promoted unhealthy and dangerous ways of losing weight as well as a very unhealthy relationship with food in general.

It wasn't until I moved to the US for university and work, and signed up for a women only pole fitness class that I learnt to be happy with my body and confident and comfortable in my own skin .

I did that class for 6 years, and it taught me to be happy with my body, and it gave me the self confidence I needed to be comfortable in my own skin no matter what others thought.

Over the years, I have worked hard to lose the excess weight I gained in the past, but I knew I had to do it in a healthy, safe, and sustainable manner, and one that promoted a healthy relationship with food in general.

One of the biggest reasons I became a trainer was to help women who might be in a similar situation to the one I was in 5 years ago with their weight loss journeys. One of the biggest pieces of advice I like to give my clients now is that you don't have to fit into the mould of the perfect female body.

Look beyond the number on the scale/ what dress size you might be, and instead focus on how your clothes fit, how much weight you can lift, and how energetic you feel in general after working out. The results will speak for themselves over time, with consistency, patience, and discipline.
