🏆🏆 SEASON WRAP – DOUBLE CHAMPIONS! 🏆🏆

What a season.
What a journey.
What an achievement for Whakatāne Rangatahi Sports & Heritage Club 💚💛

In our very first year competing in the Lakeland Championship, this team didn’t just come to participate — we came to dominate.

From the very beginning of the season, the boys showed their class, commitment, and hunger to win. Match after match, this team played with pride, passion, discipline, and unity. We stood strong together, performed under pressure, and proved ourselves as one of the most dangerous and consistent teams in the competition.

The Lakeland 40 Over Championship Final was unfortunately washed out due to rain, and with no reserve day available, the result had to be decided based on overall tournament performance.

And when the final decision was made, there was no doubt who deserved to be crowned champions.

By finishing the tournament unbeaten and with the highest net run rate, Whakatāne Rangatahi Sports & Heritage Club were officially declared the Lakeland 40 Over Champions 🏆

And that means this season, we proudly lift both trophies:

To win one title is special…
But to win both major competitions in your first season is something truly remarkable.

This wasn’t luck.
This wasn’t by chance.

This team has made a statement.
And this team has shown what Whakatāne Rangatahi Sports & Heritage Club is all about.

🏏🙌 Cricket for the Regions 🙌🏏

Yesterday at Smallbone Park in Rotorua, Poverty Bay made the journey from Gisborne to take on a Lakelands Select XI featuring senior players from Whakatāne, Rotorua, Taupō and Tokoroa.

The fixture was initiated by forward-thinking members of Poverty Bay Cricket, with strong support from Peter Zanzottera at Northern Districts Cricket. The goal is to create more aspirational opportunities for players and lay the foundation for a proposed Heartland Competition in the 2026–27 season.

Match Summary
With travel considerations in mind, the match was reduced to 35 overs per side. Poverty Bay batted first and showed promising intent early, playing several attractive shots. However, they were unable to convert starts into substantial scores. Gautam Sareen top-scored with a well-made 37, anchoring the innings as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Lakelands’ bowling unit kept things tight throughout, with young spinner Kaiden Young leading the effort and helping restrict Poverty Bay to 143.

The Chase
In reply, Lakelands approached the chase with confidence and positive intent. The top order laid a strong platform, with:
• Harry Singh – 40
• Mitch Kane – 40
• Jesse Russ – 38

Their contributions ensured the target was always within reach.

James Burrell was the standout bowler for Poverty Bay, delivering an excellent spell of 2/11 from 6 overs, but the modest total left little margin for error.

Lakelands completed the chase in the 28th over, finishing 144/3 and securing victory with 7 wickets in hand.

Looking Ahead
This match marks an exciting step toward broader regional competition. With continued support from Northern Districts and growing enthusiasm among players and administrators, the vision of a Heartland Cricket Competition is gaining real momentum.

More fixtures like this are eagerly anticipated — watch this space next summer.

THE OG OF BIG GAMES — HARRY “HULK” SINGH

When the pressure rises and the stage gets bigger, some players shine brighter.
And right now, Harry “Hulk” Singh is in absolutely red-hot form.

Leading his side with authority in the Lakelands T20 Championship, Harry has been unstoppable with the bat, smashing consecutive “6 “half-centuries in his last SIX matches — a run of form that has made him one of the most dangerous players in the tournament.

When it mattered most, in the semifinal and the final, Harry stepped up again.

In both knockout games, he delivered match-winning performances and remained NOT OUT in both the semifinal and the final, guiding his team calmly to victory and proving why he is known as the OG of big games. Finishing the job like a true leader.

But championships are won by teams, and this squad showed its true strength.

The bowlers were ruthless.
In the semifinal the opposition was destroyed for just 80 runs, and in the final they were blown away for only 50 runs, setting up perfect opportunities for the captain to finish the job with the bat.

The momentum doesn’t stop here…

A Proud Moment for Whakatane Rangatahi Sports and Heritage Club 🏆

What an incredible season it has been for our club in the 2025–2026 Lakelands Cricket Championship.

In our very first season, Whakatane Rangatahi Sports and Heritage Club has achieved something truly special by winning the Lakelands T20 Championship. The team delivered a dominant performance in the final, bowling out the opposition for just 49 runs before chasing the target comfortably to secure the trophy.

This success belongs to the entire squad. Every player contributed at different moments during the season, showing great teamwork, commitment and belief.

LOCAL HEROES KUNAL AND ACHAN SHINE AGAIN FOR WHAKATĀNE RANGATAHI SPORTS CLUB:

Whakatāne Rangatahi Sports Club delivered another dominant performance in Round 10 of the Lakelands Championship 40-over competition, posting an imposing 308/7 before securing a comprehensive 156-run victory over Geyser City Ressies.

Local hero Kunal Mahajan once again proved why he has become one of the competition’s most consistent performers. Producing a composed and timely 50 off 46 balls — his third half-century of the season — Mahajan anchored the innings when stability was needed most. He then returned with the ball to claim 2 wickets for 25 runs from 5 overs, completing an outstanding all-round contribution.

At the other end, Achan Jot Singh delivered a superb 89 runs, narrowly missing a century but setting the foundation for Rangatahi’s commanding total. His innings combined patience, control and smart shot selection to build momentum throughout the middle overs.

The bowling unit backed up the batting effort, dismissing Geyser City for 152 in 31 overs to seal the emphatic win.

With bat and ball firing and senior players stepping up under pressure, Whakatāne Rangatahi Sports Club’s local heroes continue to shine brightly this season.

A big thank you to EBOP Cricket, especially Satish, Alex Yates, and the whole club for hosting us at Rex Morpeth when our ground wasn’t available. Really appreciate the support.

🔥 Batting Brilliance – The Trio in Red-Hot Form

From the scorecard, you can clearly see our batters stepped up beautifully:

⭐ Harwinder Singh – 60 (38)

Batting with pure confidence, Harwinder tore into the bowlers from ball one. Clean hitting, positive intent, and a strike rate of 157.89 set the tone for a big total—his innings completely shifted momentum in our favour.

⭐ Kunal Mahajan – 50 (64)

Mr. Consistent delivers again! Kunal held the innings together in the middle overs with maturity and excellent shot selection. His calm and calculated batting ensured we never lost stability.

⭐ Kulvir Singh – 50 (23)*

The finisher! Kulvir lit up the ground with a blistering unbeaten half-century at an unbelievable strike rate of 217.39. His late fireworks pushed us well past the 300 mark and broke the opposition’s spirit.

All three boys are in serious form, scoring fifties back-to-back and showing the depth and talent of our batting lineup.

Other valuable contributions came from Achan Jot (21), Jasdeep (15), Simar (28), and Harry Hulk Singh (30) who kept rotating the strike and kept the pressure on.

🔥 MATCH REPORT – WHAKATĀNE RANGATAHI 40 OVER – BIG WIN AGAINST EBOP 🔥

What a game, whānau!
Today at Rex Morpeth Park, our Whakatāne Rangatahi 40 Over side put on one of the most complete all-round performances of the season, defeating EBOP CC by a massive 129 runs.

🔹 Tough Start – Early Wickets Down

The boys didn’t start easy…
Early wickets put us under pressure at 14/1, 23/2 and 30/3. EBOP were all over us, and it looked like a long day ahead.

🔹 The Turning Point – Kulvir & Simar’s Match-Saving Partnership

Then came the partnership that changed everything.
Kulvir Singh (70 off 78) and Simar Singh (57 off 66) built a calm, intelligent and dominant stand, dragging team back into the game.

Both of them scored their maiden 50s for the club — a massive moment for the boys and a big boost for the team. Shot brothers! 💛💚

Their partnership took us to a powerful 8/232 in 40 overs — a total that looked impossible earlier.

🔹 The Bowlers Shut the Door – Total Domination

When it was our turn with the ball, the boys didn’t give EBOP even a sniff.

Our pace unit led by:
• Captain Ricky Barring
• Abhijith Nadh
• Kunal Mahajan

kept constant pressure from both ends.
Wickets kept coming, the lines were tight, and the discipline was outstanding.

EBOP were bowled out for 103, with our bowlers making them surrender well before reaching the target.

Whakatāne Rangatahi 40 Over beat EBOP CC by 129 runs.
A strong statement win, especially against another Whakatāne club.
