Dear All,

I wanted to take this opportunity to confirm the new Board of karate New Zealand, welcome, congratulations and thank you for stepping forward.

To the outgoing Board members, again thank you for your time and commitment over recent months and years of service to Karate NZ.

I appreciate what you gave in a voluntary capacity on top of busy lives. George Glasiuss takes a well-earned break after many years as treasurer.

To all, feel free to join me in congratulations and thanks of the new board. Again, feel free to join in thanks to outgoing board members.

I will convene the new board very shortly to get going on the actions coming out of the AGM.

For me as President and Chair, I will continue to progress and to promote Karate in NZ.

📣 WKF Announcement 📣

From the first of January 2023 the latest changes to the competition rules begin to take effect, the full revised set of rules are available on the WKF website: https://www.wkf.net/structure-statutes-rules.

Highlight of changes:

Kumite

1. WKF Approved Helmet 🪖

From 1st January 2023 the use of the protective “WKF Helmet” or “WKF Face Mask” will be COMPULSORY in U14 categories.

From 1st January 2024 exclusively the use of the “WKF Helmet” will be allowed for the U14 categories.



2. Penalties ❌

The two existing lines of penalties will be unified in single tier system, through their unification and reduction in number. The Referee will take care of all warnings and penalties.



3. Electronic scoring system ✅

The flags currently used by the corner judges, will be replaced with joysticks, which automatically combine the result immediately. The flags currently used by the corner judges, will for official WKF events, except for Youth League, be replaced with joysticks, where the points given by judges will be instantly indicated on the monitors and the referee will stop the bout to signal the points given. The rules are now written to accommodate both flags and joysticks.



Kata

4. Number of Judges 🛂

In Kata competition the number of Judges counted towards the final score will be 5 o 7 (instead of 3 of 7). Only the highest and lowest scores obtained will be eliminated. Also, the guidelines for giving scores and the system for resolution of ties have been simplified, through the elimination of the different weighs of scores in athletic (30%) and technical (70%) as was the case until now.



General

5. Attire for competitors - Karategi 🥋

From 1st January 2023 the use of “WKF Approved Karategi” with embroidered brands on the shoulders in RED or BLUE will be COMPULSORY in all the categories of Kata and Kumite, for all official WKF events (World Championships and Karate 1 - Premier League, Series A and Youth League).

For the current Senior World Champions and Karate 1 - Premier League Grand Winners the use of “WKF Approved Karategi” with embroidered brands on the shoulders in GOLD will be COMPULSORY.

This is already applicable and compulsory after the transition period ending 31st December 2022.

2021 New Zealand National Karate Championships and the 2021 New Zealand National Secondary Schools' Karate Championships

To all sensei, coaches, players, parents, and supporters,

As of today, with the Auckland and Northland regions at Level 4, and the rest of the country at Level 3, the Karate New Zealand Executive Board, in consultation with the Coaching and Referees Councils, will have to postpone the 2021 New Zealand National Karate Championships and the 2021 New Zealand National Secondary Schools' Karate Championships.

The new date for these competitions is Sunday 10th October 2021 in Auckland at the Barfoot and Thompson Stadium. All of New Zealand will have to be at Alert level 1 for the postponement date to go ahead and to safely hold the event. We thank the staff from the stadium for accommodating our fixture with the latest Covid situation disrupting many scheduled events throughout New Zealand.

We will review and confirm a ‘go or no go’ 16 days before the new competition date ie: on Friday 24th September and communicate to everyone either way. If we cannot host the championships on this proposed new date, we will cancel both for 2021.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause; however, in our efforts to be able to hold our Nationals event we must balance the health and well-being of our athletes and support personnel.

Dear Sensei, Karate-ka and parents



The Government will announce Monday week, 21st September, where New Zealand will sit with Covid-19 as we move toward the dates for the three tournaments above.

The Coaching Council, in collaboration with the Executive Board, will then confer to the viability of hosting the 2020 competitions and the Invitational National Training Camp. The Governments' announcement will dictate our decision. We will inform you of the outcome on Tuesday 22nd September.

However, clubs/ associations must be aware that entries close this coming Saturday 19th September at 6:00 pm. Ultimately, if there are not enough entries, regardless of the COVID-19 Level, the three National Competitions and the Training Camp will be cancelled. A reminder to clubs/ associations, there is a need to request entry permission before entering players, and players should have filled in the online KNZ Player Registration form - as was outlined in the previous three bulletin's.
