Seido Karate Wellington Welcome to Seido Wellington. Our dojo is open to ALL, where each individual can reach their goals. There are now other Seido dojo in the Wellington region too.

Seido Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art founded in 1976 by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura. Sei Shihan Ben Otang opened the first Wellington Seido Karate dojo in 1982. Seido Karate Wellington has had its dojo at various locations around Wellington, and is now located at the Renouf Tennis Centre on Brooklyn hill - led by Sei Shihan Ben with Kaizen Academy NZ Limited.

A busy Saturday with student promotions. Senpai Shaun Clark achieved his sandan in the wee hours; training since he was 6 years old and now at the grand age of 21 years. Congratulations Senpai Shaun! Following on was the general kyu grade promotion officiated by Senpai Christine who gave all the candidates a serious cardio workout 😅. Everyone rose to the challenge and deserved their new grades. What a great display of Seido Karate at the North Is tournament today. The 150 competitors brought their energy, spirit and camaraderie to make a memorable day for all. Much gratitude to all the visiting dojos for your support, including Eiko Hanshi Renzie and all seniors who undertook judging. And a special mention to Team Wellington - the whole dojo pulled together to make this event possible. Congratulations to the Veteran champions - Senpai Christine Barraud and Senpai Ian Paulin and Women’s Sogo Senpai Sasha Sharma and Men’s Sogo Senpai Daniel Akerblom. OSU!!

Osu! We’re excited to welcome you all to the North Island Seido Tournament in less than one week! We hope everyone has been training hard, enjoying the journey, and looking forward to a fantastic event together.

🟦 Friday (📍Wellington dojo)
6:30–7:30pm
Registration, weigh-in and merchandise pickup
(Draws will be up at the venue from 7:30pm)
7:30pm - Judges briefing (at dojo)

🟦 Saturday (📍Venue: Renouf Tennis)
7:45am - Tournament doors open (event starts 8:45am)
8:00am - Judges briefing

Note:
• Bags, Bo, Sai and head gear are available at venue to borrow
• Café and coffee ☕ 🥪 will be available with proceeds to our New York team
• The venue can be quite cold, bring adequate warm layers

We look forward to seeing ALL competitors, families, officials, supporters and our amazing volunteer crew come together for a fantastic North Island Seido Tournament. Osu!

Easter Class Schedule:
Dojo closed Friday; normal classes Saturday and Sunday; Monday 5pm tournament training followed by a 6pm general class for all grades. There may be easter eggs for very good Bunnies 🐰🐰🐰

Well it was another very busy weekend for Seido karateka from around the region this weekend. First up the black belts were witness to Senpai Sasha promoting to Nidan. Feisty, fierce and determined to the last fight what a magnificent display of karate. And as one Nidan guy was overheard saying "she is the scariest woman I've ever met"!! Appropriate then that Kyoshi Ang officiated the grading.

After a hearty breakfast of porridge the dojo was soon full to the brim of families, friends and kyu grades representing all regional dojos gathering to support Trinity from Seido Karate Kapiti and Beatrice, Isabel and Rhiannon from our dojo. Ranging in age from 14-18 years, what a display of determination and grit from these strong young women. Even in their young lives they've all faced hurdles to work through and they all humbly spoke about the importance of support and benefit received from their dojo communities in their journey to shodan. In acknowledging their success Sei Shihan Peter talked about the proverb "it takes a village to raise a child" and reminded us all that our Seido dojos can be seen as part of that village for every student, young or old.

Congratulations to you all - we're all so very proud of you. OSU!

In the wee small hours last Saturday Senpai Ed Goode successfully promoted to Sandan. Normally he is the dojo ringleader when it comes to fun and quirky escapades so it was good to see him still smiling at the end. Congratulations Senpai Ed; we all know this was a massive achievement for you and so well deserved. OSU!
