Tau waihīrere - waterfall - is an AWHI favourite for sure. Otherwise known as ‘legs up the wall’, this is a great shape for downregulating the nervous system, stimulating lymphatic flow and quiets the mind.

💧Tau - to land, to settle
💧Wai - water
💧Hīrere - gush, flow, cascade; waterfall

Sweep your waewae up against a wall or prop a cushion/block or hands under your sacrum to elevate the hips. Hang out for a bit…mauritau 😎

Our kupu for today - tau toa tuatahi - is the te reo Māori name for the asana Warrior 1.

🥷🏻Tau - to land, to settle; also the word indicating ‘pose’ (like ‘asana’ in Virabhadrasana; the sanskrit word for the same shape).
🥷🏻Toa - brave, courage, warrior
🥷🏻Tuatahi - first

This naming suggests a warrior strength different from the chest-beating variety but settled, quiet and composed…the kind that holds its ground without needing to prove anything. It’s a shape that asks us to be both steady and at ease, or ‘sthira-sukham-āsanam’ in sanskrit.

Repeat this word a few times and then change the number on the end to learn a few others along with it — eg, tau toa tuarua (Warrior 2), tau toa tuatoru (Warrior 3) and tau toa kōaro (Reverse Warrior)!

ACT is a mindfulness-based therapy focused on developing psychological flexibility. It emphasises observing thoughts rather than getting 'hooked' by them, accepting uncomfortable experiences, and identifying personal values to guide behaviour.

You'll learn specific techniques like 'dropping the anchor,' a three-step process for meeting challenging feelings with acceptance rather than struggle, and creating a 'life map' to align behaviours with personal values.

Many ACT principles align with exactly what we do in our yoga practice, and this course brings them together so we can live more fully - in alignment with our WHY - on AND off the mat.

And the end goal? To realise that experiencing pain is a part of being human. Rather than striving to 'fix' yourself or maintain a state of constant calm, you'll learn to navigate your emotions with greater resilience and compassion.

This course is for students AND teachers of yoga asana. No prior knowledge of the subject matter required to enrol.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori kicks off today but at AWHI, te reo Māori isn’t a once-a-year thing on our calendar. It’s an integral part of our kaupapa, our classes, asana names and how we think about hauora through the lens of Te Whare Tapa Whā.

This year’s kaupapa is Te Reo Towns, celebrating our communities that keep the reo alive by using it. So this week, come to class or check out our socials and learn a kupu or two that you can practice and normalise as part of your everyday vocab! No pressure, no exams, no judgement…just practice.

Today’s kupu - Pū Āio - meaning yoga or, more specifically, the wellspring of peace; the source of calm.

Kia kaha te reo Māori 💪

One of several timetable offerings we have to make asana and Pilates more accessible is our Friday 9:30am Align class (60 minutes), which is only $12 for a drop-in (includes mat hire!).

Align is a non-heated, beginner-friendly vinyasa yoga class that focuses on a particular theme, anatomical concept or building towards a peak pose. Expect a slower paced flow, directed cueing and a breakdown of the mechanics of a pose before giving the shape a go for yourself!

No advanced booking required - we always have space for you...haere mai, and hope to see you Friday!

We’re bombarded with health messaging on a daily basis - contradictory, overwhelming and intense. Breathe like this, don’t drink that, avoid sugar but not honey but definitely not agave, magnesium, zinc & 4 litres water daily but only if it’s filtered, pink salt not white, weights are a must, avoid gluten, avoid meat, eat meat, not those vegetables unless they’re certified organic, live your best life, be a vibe, it’s all a vibe…ahhh!!!

But what if we told you that you already have the answers? That actually, letting go is the path to getting it ‘right’?

Yoga in ACTion — an 8-week online course designed to support mental and emotional health — will help you navigate the confusing terrain of the wellness industry’s “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts” for living a good life. To get you there, your facilitator Melissa Rivard of Wellkind.co.nz - an experienced clinical naturopath, nutrition & health coach and yoga teacher - will provide practical tools for everyday living that blend yoga philosophy with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a mindfulness-based therapy focused on psychological flexibility. This kaupapa moves away from the wellness industry’s pressure to chase a perfectly calm nervous system and encourages you to embrace your full humanity instead — treating the very painful emotions or experiences that drive us towards quick fixes as natural…not a problem to be ‘fixed.’

Many ACT principles overlap neatly with what we also do in yoga. Movement, breathwork and other mindfulness practices offer a unique way into ACT’s core ideas, helping you bridge the gap between your practice on the mat and their real-world application off the mat!.

What to expect:

Eight 90-minute sessions, workshop-style sessions online, from anywhere you want to dial in:
→ Grounding exercises
→ Concept teaching (yoga philosophy + ACT)
→ An introspective activity
→ Movement practice to apply it all
→ Take-home learning to keep exploring

🗓️ Sat 3 Oct-21 Nov, 9-10:30am weekly.

Fully online, confidential and community-driven.

👋 Hands On Assisting Course 👋

Offering hands-on assists has become a fairly controversial practice in recent years, resulting in a general decline in most modern vinyasa classes. We think that’s a shame.

Join the indomitable, much-loved Russell (Rusty) Millar for a weekend course that will provide you with the skills and confidence for delivering safe & supportive hands-on assists in the classroom. These are not “adjustments”, nor “corrections” — but assists designed to enhance your students’ practice. The course covers (amongst other things):

🤝 Consent protocols and trauma-informed practices for obtaining consent
🤝 Different types of assists: verbal, energetic, and mechanical touch
🤝 When NOT to assist
🤝 Techniques for delivering safe and supportive assists
🤝 The opportunity to practice delivering assists.

🗓️ Fri 4:30–8:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am–4:00 pm; Sun 8:30 am–3:00 pm
📍AWHI Yoga & Wellbeing, Level 2, 15 Johnston St, Wellington CBD
💰 $349 (before 6 Oct) or $399
