In a surprising turn of events, an offshore trip has been announced — and because we have been asked more than once, to clear the air we can confirm it has nothing to do with SWIS!

So, what is SWIS up to then?

While we won’t be leading this particular parade, our spirits are high as we gear up for an exciting new season. We’re looking forward to welcoming junior girls stepping up into the senior grade, as well as those who are brand new to the sport — and of course, those making a return.

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic season, and we can’t wait to get started together!

Our whānau of marchers across Aotearoa and Australia have strong connections to the military through their great grandfathers and great grandmothers, their grandfathers and grandmothers, their fathers and mothers, their husbands, their brothers and sisters. Today is the day we acknowledge their service and thank them for our future.

To all our followers,

We are trying to make our sport more visible and help our National body and local associations with rebuilding it.

Are you interested in starting a team? Perhaps even a social team? There are those options nowadays to ease both marchers and volunteers into the sport.

Or perhaps you'd like to give judging a go?

There are workshops available for any potential coaches or judges interested in getting involved in Marching in NZ!

As our teams post their videos of their marches, we see many comments of congratulations which is absolutely lovely. And now and then, we might see a comment of critique. We are calling out to you!

Thanks to our Wellington members who do so much and wear

"More than one hat"

The lines aren’t quite as long these days,
The ranks a little tight,
We count who’s here, then count again
Just to check we’re right.

The boots still strike in steady time,
The smiles still hit their mark,
But half the team’s on duty too
Before we even start.

Judges on committees,
Writing minutes late at night,
Coaches taking training days
Then check funding apps are right.

The chaperone’s awake since dawn,
With bobby pins and tape,
And judging sheets get printed by
The ones who stay up late.

We swap our roles as fast as cues,
No time to stand and stare—
One minute fixing uniforms,
Next minute judging square.

We laugh about it—“just one more hat,”
As if it’s not absurd,
But everyone here knows too well
It’s more than just a word.

Because when numbers start to dip,
It’s people who expand—
Filling gaps with time and care,
With heart and helping hand.

It’s not just drills or polished turns,
Or lines that look just right—
It’s quiet work behind the scenes
That keeps us in the light.

So here’s to those who double up,
Who step in without fuss,
Who wear the hats no one else will
Because it matters to us.

And maybe one day we’ll step back,
With fuller teams again—
But till that day, we’ll hold the line…
However thin it’s been.
