As a club, we have sent our letter of support to Taranaki Iwi, however as our letter doesn't count for our individual members - only '1'. We ask you also make your own submissions ensuring numbers refect the level of support.

Fisheries New Zealand is seeking submissions on a proposed two-year extension of the Western Taranaki temporary fisheries closure.

The Rāhui Steering Committee, which includes Hapū Kaitiaki, Community Leaders, and Boat Club Representatives, supports the proposed extension.

Why another two years?

The key reason is to avoid reopening the coast before a sustainable long-term approach is ready.

The proposed extension would help protect the recovery already achieved while monitoring continues and the mahi towards a long-term strategy progresses.

The closure is not the destination

The temporary closure is not intended to be the end point.

The longer-term pathway is expected to progress well before the end of the proposed two-year extension, allowing the temporary closure to transition into a long-term approach shaped by hapū and the wider community.

The closure protects what has been achieved while we continue determining what comes next.

*CONSULTATION* We’re inviting feedback on a proposed temporary closure of shellfish fisheries along the western coastline of Taranaki.

The closure would prohibit the taking of all shellfish (except rock lobster), all seaweeds (excluding beach cast seaweed), all anemones, all stingrays, and both conger eel species under section 186A of the Fisheries Act 1996.

Fisheries New Zealand invites submissions from people who have an interest in the stocks concerned or in the effects of fishing in the area concerned.

Mai i Tapuae ki Taungātara he karanga tēnei kia rauika mai.

From Tapuae to Taungātara, this is a call to our wider community to come together to share thoughts and ideas, build understanding, and help shape what comes next for our shared coastline — KI TUA, beyond the rāhui.

The rāhui / s186A Temporary Closure was put in place in response to rapidly declining shellfish stocks along the Western Taranaki coastline and applies to the area from Tapuae Stream to Taungātara Stream.

Community Hui 3 – Compliance, Education and Policing

This hui is one in a series of engagements with our community. The focus of this wānanga is to explore how compliance, education, and community responsibility can support the protection and long-term sustainability of our coastline and fisheries resources.

During this meeting we will talk through:

• Role of kaitiaki, MPI and formal enforcement
• Education-first approach
• Safety and support for kaitiaki and community leaders
• Community responsibility and behaviour expectations
• Reporting and managing non-compliance

Outcome we’re working towards:

Clear expectations around compliance and shared responsibility.

Your thoughts, experiences, and voices are important. This hui is about bringing the community into the discussion — sharing ideas, hearing perspectives, and working together to create a sustainable pathway forward for our moana, our reefs, and future generations.

This is your opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas and help shape future management approaches.

HEADS UP reminder that Cape Egmont Half Marathon finishes at the club tomorrow 😀
They have over 800 runners registered, so the grounds will be busy.

The clubrooms wil be open during the event, with Catch and Cravings snack menu and hot drinks.

Please listen to instructions from their team if you do head down. It is an amazing fundraiser for a cause close to many of us.
